新書を軸とした坪内氏の回想記である。ここで紹介されているものは、「古き良き時代」の新書である。今では「名著」と呼ばれるものも数多く含まれている。あの頃の新書はよかったな、それに引き換え今の新書ときたら・・という思いに駆られる。そんな本である。そんな本を新書の中でも新参者である新潮新書から出してもいいのか、と思ってしまった。皮肉な結果である。

本好き、神保町好きの向きにはお勧めできるかもしれないが。

この本は新書のブックガイドというよりは、著者の体験した日本の読書文化というか、読書事情の歴史を紹介したエッセイだと思う。
といわけで、本好きが読むと色々感心したり、共感できたりする部分が多く、楽しい読み物だったりする。

紹介されている本は確かに入手しづらいものが多いが、岩波新書などはアンコール復刊などもあるし、気長に古本屋を探してみるのも良いかもしれない。

本好きの私は，読書ガイド的な本にもついつい手が出てしまう。
とくに，新書好きと聞けば，読まないわけにいかなかった。
私の読書傾向と本著者の読んだ本とは２割くらいしかダブらないと思う。
しかし，読書本の魅力は，
1自分の読んだ本を著者がどう感じたかを知る楽しみ
だけでなく，
2自分の守備範囲外にどんな面白本があるのかを知る喜び
にもある。
その意味では，同好の士として，大変楽しませてもらった一冊。
講談社現代新書のアメリカ本を分析する視覚や，作家による新書本を語る切り口は，十分に読むに値すると思う。
