検定外高校理科教科書シリーズ第４弾。
大人になった今だからこそ，読んで面白い知識が満載。
「なぜ」そうなるのかを「なるほど」と思わせながら解説してくれる。
◆マグマが上昇する原動力は浮力である（周囲の岩石よりも密度が小さいから地表に向けて上昇してくる）。
◆雨には，氷の粒が途中で融けた「冷たい雨」と，水滴が急激に成長して落下してくる「温かい雨」（夕立など）がある。
◆縄文文化が西日本であまり発達しなかったのは，阿蘇カルデラ・姶良カルデラの大噴火の影響も大きいに違いない。
・・・・・などなど。
半端な雑学本を読むなら，この本をお薦めします。

「新しい高校〜の教科書」シリーズの１つ。４冊とも、きちんとした内容で、「やさしく説明する」といいながら「いい加減に説明する」ものではない。大学１年以来、いわゆる理科の授業は受けていないが、楽しめたし、あの頃以来の科学の発展も見ることができた。このくらいは社会人として理解しておきたい、少なくとも何かのときに頼りにしたい内容になっている。化学式を見ると頭痛がするような純粋文系の人にこそお勧めしたい４冊です。

高校で地学を学ばなかったが、この本は面白い。近年、よく世界中で大きな地震が起こっているが、この本のおかげでニュースで専門家が話していると、「あっ!これ…」と気付かされることも。理系・文系問わず、自然が好きなら一読の価値アリ、です!
