　小中学校を見通した理科テキスト「新しい科学（理科）の教科書」シリーズの入り口にあたる巻です。
　子ども向けの本という体裁をとっていますが、その中身は「義務教育の理科で本来身につけさせたいはずだった技能や思考力を育てるためには、このような内容・手順が必要なのでは」という提言になっています。「教科書」というよりは「現場（に近い立場）の提案」として、子どもと関わる機会を持つ多くの人が「子どもにとっての勉強の意味」を考えるきっかけとして手にとって欲しいと感じました。

　現在の学校教科書が、「ゆとりの創出」の名のもとに（実際には総合学習などが色々と詰め込まれ、「ゆとり」は出来てませんが）薄くなったのはご存じの通りですが、その際「小・中を通して見たとき内容の重複をさける」ように中身が削られました。
　その結果、一つの題材について各学年で振り返りとステップアップを繰り返す学習形態は失われ、季節や地域の特性に応じた生の自然に触れる機会も減ってしまいました。　代わりに「実験観察、日常体験の重視」として取り入れられたのは、科学的な概念の理解には不向きな「身近な素材」や刹那的なインパクトだけの「実験」でした…

　こうした問題点に対して、本書では、単に内容を増やすだけでなく

　・実験・観察は、可能な限り子どもが自分で確かめられる題材を扱っている
　　（そうでない場合も「あきらめないで」と、代用手段の存在を示唆している）
　・調べると同時に、各種のスキルを訓練する要素が盛り込まれている
　・動植物の成長や季節にあわせて、同じ題材を学年内で何度かとりあげている

といった工夫で答えようとしています。
　確かに、シリーズを通してみると、細かな点では異論もあるし、見た目の派手さや、あっと驚く面白さはそれほど感じませんが「全ての人に備わって欲しい最低限のスキルの育成」として、本書のような学習が公教育で検討されて欲しいと感じました。

学校もこんな教科書だったらなぁと思いました。「やってみよう」コーナーが多く、実際にやってみたくなることばかり。また、「こばなし」コーナーは、一歩つっこんだ内容で、ためになります。学校で習った後、この本で復習しつつ、より詳しい内容を楽しんで学べました。理科が大好きなお子さんに、特におすすめです。ただひとつだけ、写真やイラストがカラーじゃないのが残念です。
