　夢十夜を筆頭に、この新潮文庫版では読みごたえのある短編がギュッと詰まっていて、長年愛読している一冊です。高校生の宿題で読んで以来、何回も読み直しましたが、やっぱり漱石先生之短編では「夢十夜」が一番好きです。十夜の間に見た夢として語るオムニバスで、気分で読む順番を選べたり不思議な形式の短編だな、思っていましたが、いつ読んでも印象が新鮮なので飽きません。特に善いのは護国寺の運慶の話や、何夜も何か待っている男の話。そして「こんな夢を見た。」というフレーズ。黒沢明監督が触発されたのもうなずけます。この他には、モナリザのことを書いた話も、明治の人の目にはモナリザはこんな風に映ったのかな、と想像がふくらんできます。

私の一番好きな漱石の小品「文鳥」

「十月早稲田に移る　伽藍のような書斎にただ一人、
片付けた顔を頬杖で支えていると・・・」から始まる、
たった数ページの私=漱石と文鳥の世界。

まるで世界にこの鳥と私しか存在しえないような綿密な文鳥の描写。
漱石は猫といい、犬といい、この文鳥といい、動物を本当に面白く
「読ませるような」描写をします。

「昔美しい女を知っていた」と、文鳥を過去に「私」が好きだった
らしい女に見立て、ただの動物の写生文に終わらせません。
文鳥のしぐさを「菫ほど小さい人が、黄金の槌で瑪瑙の碁石でも
つづけ様に敲いている」ようだなどと描く漱石の狂気のような綿密さ。

大変過小評価されている「文鳥」ですが、漱石の随筆、

小品がお好きな方は是非読んでみて欲しい掌編です。

　夏目漱石というと　長編小説が有名かもしれないが　そんな漱石が短編を書くと　こんな無気味な作品が出来るという好例。

　内田百聞の「冥土」もそうだが　この時代の短編集には　純粋に文学美を探究したような　奇妙な味わいの作品がある。漱石の「夢十夜」も　そんな色彩に彩られている。
　ここで漱石が語っている話は　彼自身の夢という形を借りた　当時の「時代の不安」なのかもしれない。例えばムンクの「叫び」に似ていなくもないと思ってしまう。漱石が気がつくと　気がつかざると。

　漱石が作者であるということを超えて　傑作。美術館を巡っているような　読書体験。
