1906年、ドイツのユダヤ人家庭に生まれる。マールブルク大学ではハイデガー、ハイデルベルク大学ではヤスパースのもとで、哲学を学ぶ。1933年、ナチスの迫害を逃れフランスへ、41年にはアメリカへ亡命。二〇世紀の全体主義と対峙し、新たに始める人間の奇跡的能力を信じて、真の自由を実現することを生涯の課題とした。1975年没

高橋 勇夫
1953年、岩手県生まれ。東京大学英文科卒業。専修大学准教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　「全体主義の起原」「人間の条件」「革命について」といった主著で扱われた主題群を、哲学と政治の関わり方を通じて考え、著者独特の政治哲学を展開している著書。著者自身が纏めて首尾一貫した論述をなしたものではなく、アレントの遺稿をジェローム・コーンが編纂した体裁を取っている。

　著者の来歴を調べてみると、ハイデガーの教えを受けて哲学を専攻し、ついでに彼と恋愛関係に入り、後にヤスパースにも学び、ナチスの迫害を逃れてアメリカに渡った後に政治を深く研究し始めるという独特の軌跡をとっていて、本書はそんな彼女の履歴の独自性が強く反映している著作といえる。というのも、第一章がソクラテスの哲学が政治的実践とかかわりあっていたことを示す記述で始まり、そのソクラテスが死を与えられ、受け入れたことがプラトンにおいて哲学と政治を分離する態度に及んで、以後の哲学の非政治性を特徴付け、逆に政治から哲学的思索が排除されたことで思考と行動が分離し、著者が高い価値を与える活動と言論の有効性が弱まっていくきっかけになったというように、自らが学んだ哲学の知見を通じて政治の仕組みと働きの本質を明らかにしようとしているからだ。ハンナ・アレントの難解さは、哲学的に政治を言語化しているからではないだろうか。

　哲学の効き目の最大の源は、自明性を示す物事に根源的な問いかけをする力として考えられ、しかし、政治が機能しなくなればそんな問いかけを聞き取れる能力も失われ、互いに思いを交わすことで変化していける気風も、そんな振る舞いを可能にする人間の複数性もが失われていく、という内容は特に印象に残った。

　そして何しろ、政治が保証しようとする自由は個人の内面にあるのではなくお互いに関わり合う人と人の間にこそ存在すること、そんな風に確保されうる政治空間は何かのきっかけで失われる可能性が高いことなどの指摘は、現代にも妥当する卓見に思える。政治は彼方で行われている他人事ではなく、自分たちの関わりあいの形を決める重大な機能で、自分たちの側から意思を示すこともできる制度であることは、最近特に考えさせられる。「風向き」に擬せられる政治的表象ではなく、そんな思考や行動を可能にし、不可能にもできる政治の仕組みと働きについての書。
