「己の無垢なる〈分身〉との邂逅と別離」をテーマにしているという
意味では、『砂糖菓子の弾丸は撃ちぬけない』と対をなす作品。


ただ、『砂糖菓子』が明確な事件が起こるミステリ的要素を含んだ作品であるのに対し、
本作は、一種のマジックリアリズム的手法で思春期の焦燥や不安が描かれています。

そうしたファンタジックな作品空間が選ばれることで、少女の淡く、
儚い心情が、より切実に読者の胸に迫ってくるように感じました。


ところで、この角川文庫版では未公開エンディング２本を含む、
三通りの結末が収録されています。以下、その内訳を記します。


　　・「Ｅｎｄｉｎｇ１　放浪」…最初に書かれたもの
　　・「Ｅｎｄｉｎｇ３　安全装置」…編集部の要請で、ハッピーエンドに書き換えたもの
　　・「Ｅｎｄｉｎｇ２　戦場」…３を短くと要請され、書き換えたもの


ファミ通文庫版では、２がエンディングとして使われています。


三通りのエンディングを、それぞれ単独で娯しむことも可能ですが、
やはり、すべてを一つの物語として受け取るべきなのだと思います。

謎の美少女・白雪の正体は結局なんだったのか、「電脳戦士」はその後どうなったのか……。
本作は、そのようなことへの「答え」を求める物語ではありません。

ある人にとっては、現在進行形の、また、ある人にとってはるか昔に通り
過ぎた、思春期という疾風怒濤の季節を生きる自分と出逢う小説なのです。

最終章以外は、物語は一筋に進む。桜庭一樹が描く少女らしい、痛みと怒りを甘さでくるんだような、少女でしかありえない少女たちの物語だ。
家族内の問題や、教室の中の閉塞感、世代特有の焦燥感や無力感。一枚岩でありえない記憶と自我。純粋さを失って複雑に曖昧になっていく私というもの。胸の奥がひりつくような懐かしさが立ち上る、圧倒的な既視感。
あの年頃の気分を、どうしてこう、この人は書くのが上手いのだろう。大人になりたくない、大人になりきれない、大人になることが途方もなく難しく感じていた、あの頃の気分を。
現実からは逃げ切れない。現実に追いつかれ、飲み込まれる。それが、穏当で安全で現実的な終わり方であり、多くの大人はそんな風にその時代をやり過ごしてきた。だから、生き延びることができて、再び元の世界に戻れることは、ハッピーではある。
でも、せっかくのSF設定なのだ。一人ぐらい、そのまま逃げ切ることを許してあげてもいいじゃないか。子どもの頃を思い出した後では、Ending１が一番のハッピーエンドのような気もした。

大人になる前に
はやく大人になりたい人に
大人のことが大嫌いな人に
そして、「大人」と「子供」を併せ持つ、19歳に。

この本を贈ります。

この本がどうだったとか自分は何を感じたとかをここで書くつもりはありません。
それは人それぞれ違うものであるはずだし、またそうであってほしいと思うからです。
それだけの多様性をこの本は持っています。
自分の感性を大切にしながらこの本と対話してほしいと思います。
