1957年、広島県生まれ。軍事ジャーナリスト。83年、埼玉大学教養学部卒業後、航空自衛隊に幹部候補生として入隊。情報通信関係の将校として十年間の勤務を経て一等空尉にて退職、評論活動に入る。95年、「日本の安全保障の現在と未来」で第一回読売論壇新人賞佳作に入選(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

悲しいことではあるが、国際政治というものが「軍事力」という剥き出しのパワーによって動いていることは紛れもない事実である。そして新聞の国際面の記事で伝えられる「事実」だけを追っていると、わけがわからなくなることがときどきある。そういうときに理解を助ける補助線になるのは、しばしば軍事常識である。
例えば、つい先日北朝鮮が「核武装」発言をしたにもかかわらず、国際社会はいたって平静だった。ブラフと見抜いていたからである。北朝鮮に弾道ミサイルの技術はない。従って仮に初歩的な原爆を持っていて脅威にはならない。そういうことなのだが、なかなか日本の新聞はそうした解説をしてくれないので、なんで大騒ぎにならないのかという疑問を抱いた読者は放置されることになる。
本書は、幅広い軍事常識をわかりやすくまとめてくれている。入門編としても優れているが、ある程度軍事を知っている人でも結構「ほほう」という発見があると思われる。お勧めの一冊である。

反戦平和を叫ぶのは良い。しかし、軍事に関することを口にしただけで軍国主義者のレッテルを貼るのはどうかと思う。こういう風潮に長い間支配され、多くの日本人は軍事音痴になってしまったのである。

そのため、以下のようなことを説明出来る人は少ないのではないか？
■軍隊に階級が必要なのはなぜか
■軍務上犯した罪を一般の刑法でなく軍刑法で裁くのはなぜか
■志願兵性の方が徴兵制より民主的か
■禁止事項列挙方式と許可事項列挙方式の違い

こう言った軍事を語る上での基礎知識を身につける上で、本書は最適な一冊となるだろう。

軍事の各分野の基礎知識がふんだんに盛り込まれています。
戦車の正確な定義も把握していなかった私にとっては、目から鱗が落ちたような驚きに満ちていました。自衛隊の海外派遣、北朝鮮問題、憲法改正等の議論は、このような情報を踏まえた上でなされるべきであると思います。
また、新聞やテレビで上記のような問題が報道された時、この書籍に一度目を通しておいただけで、より現実的な捉え方ができるようになるはずです。特に7章の「現代戦の常識」は必読です。
