この本はもともと東大博物館で開かれていた「異星の踏査」展の図録として作られたものでしたが、展示会期間中の図録完売品切れという驚異的な売れ行きをうけ、このたび東京大学出版会から「惑星地質学」と名前を改め販売が開始されたものです。

実は私自身も惑星科学を研究している者なのですが、この本は我々研究者の目から見ても驚くほどクオリティが高く、現在日本語で読める惑星科学の教科書としては、文句なしに最高クラスの一冊だと思います。太陽系の惑星について一通り学ぶのに最適です。

これほど素晴らしい本は、そうそう手に入るものではありません。惑星科学に興味のある方はぜひご購入されることをおすすめします。
「異星の踏査」展で図録を買いそびれた方も、今度こそはしっかり手に入れておきましょう。

太陽系全体について、広範にわたって解説されています。最近の成果も反映されており、日本語で一般の書籍ではこれほどのものはそうないと思います。地質に限らず、大気や磁気についても書かれており、たとえば、タイタンの気象については惑星気象学よりも詳しいくらいです。また、普段見向きもされない小惑星や、微衛星についてもけっこう書かれています。ただし前提とする知識が多く、書かれていることすべてを一般の方が理解するのは大変かも知れません。また探査機が実際に訪れたことのない天体についてはほとんど触れられていません。冥王星の出番は１ページだけです。

　他のレビュー者が書かれているように本書は2008年1月7日〜2月8日にかけて東大博物館で開催された「異星の踏査」"PLANETARY GEOLOGY from APOLLO to HAYABUSA"の図録を書籍化したものです。本書の最初に書かれているように惑星地質学の教科書となるものがないことからこれを目指したとされ、企画展の図録作成のために50名を越える科学者の協力を得て3ヶ月でまとめあげたとされます。「よくぞそのような短期間でこれだけの内容をまとめあげたものだ」と感嘆させられます。
　なお、火星の地下の氷の探査を行ったフェニックス（2008年5月25日に火星の北極地域に着陸）については本書の編集のタイミングから打ち上げ前のミッションの概説となっています。これはアリゾナ大学のPhoenix Mars MissionのWebサイトを参考として補われるとよいと思います。
　素晴らしい書籍です。
