プラシーボ（プラセボ、偽薬）効果とは、「ある処置（投薬・施術など）に対し、それを受ける者への付加的な情報などによって、本来持っていない、あるいは持っている以上の薬理・生理的活性を生じること」と定義できます。
そのプラシーボ効果とはどのような現象か、20世紀末までの医療を中心とした認識・活用・研究等と、著者自身の認識や展望を述べたもの。
しかし結局本書からは、「プラシーボ効果にはよく分からないことが多い」ということが分かっただけと言っていいでしょう。
著者は恐らく「プラシーボ効果は、素晴らしく広い・強い効果の実績と可能性があり、積極的に活用しよう」というスタンスなのでしょう。しかしその著者の主張・主観に都合よく合わせるように、情報の偏りや論理の飛躍・逸脱、言葉の定義の曖昧な運用や唐突な拡大解釈などがある一方、自説にそぐわない研究などには根拠も示さずにほとんど触れず無視し切り捨てるなど、読者に誤った・偏った見方を与えかねず、ハイリスクローリターンな本であるとも言えます。
プラシーボ効果が大なり小なり存在することは否定しませんし、感覚的にも実感しえますが、本書の内容はかなり「トンデモ本」に近い情報・論理構成であると感じるところが多い印象。たまにスパイス的に脳の構造や神経伝達物質の知見なども織り込んだりしていますが、それを軸に話を展開することはなく、あくまでも「科学的っぽい味付け」程度にしか見えません。また、最後半の心理療法や宗教との関係性を考察した章で散見された、様々な現象とプラシーボ効果との突飛なこじつけには無理があると考えます。
しかしプラシーボ効果を主題にした書籍はほとんどないのが現状のため、その知見を得るキッカケづくりとしての希少性と、価格の安さを勘案して、甘めで星２つ。

古典的条件付けからカウンセリングまで，広範な心理学やその周辺領域
の知見が端的に解説してある良書．迷わず授業の推薦図書にしました．

こういう本の書ける先生の授業が受けられたらよかったなあ．

砂糖入りのカプセルを飲むと、40％もの人が痛みが治ったりする偽薬効果を心理学や医学の知識を使って分かりやすく書いてあるので、とてもためになった。私は心理学を専攻している大学生ですが、心の不思議をいろいろと考えさせてくれた良い本だと思います。
