フランス革命の頃から現在までの、フランスでの性犯罪について歴史的社会学的民俗学的法律的などの観点から調べた真面目な歴史書です。

初めの頃は、強姦は被害女性に対する犯罪というよりは、女性を「所有する」人、すなわち父親、夫、奉公先のご主人さまに対しての失礼な行為であると考えられていたこと、
被害女性については、処女であるか、暴力を受けた肉体的な傷が酷いかどうかといった点に関心が向けられる程度で、心の傷については全く考慮されなかったこと、
精神的打撃についてのパニック障害やトラウマなどに目を向けられるようになったのは１９００年代も終わりごろになってからのつい最近であること、
など、社会情勢や考え方の変化とともに、性犯罪がどういう形態を取って起こったか、それに対して医師や裁判官や世間はどういう反応をして、加害者はどのように裁かれたか、被害女性はそのように扱われたか、などを詳しく年代順に記してあります。

全編は真摯な研究から構成されて書きあげられていて、好感が持てました。
フランスだからできたことなのか？日本の一流大学所属の歴史学者でこういう内容の本をまとめて公にすることは可能なのか？など色々なことを考えさせられました。

主にフランスにおける強姦やその社会的な歴史についての記録、判例などを中心に記述されています。

中世ヨーロッパにおいては、女性の人権は階級によって区別されていたこと。低層階級の女性に対する強姦は無視されており、子供も同様だったことなどがわかります。
やや直訳っぽい生硬な文章は読みにくいですね。

まさに、女性史といっていい内容の本です。それと、子どもの社会的位置付け。それだけ、女性や子どもへの性的暴力が昔から行われていたわけですが、その犯罪資料から、人権の歴史をあぶりだした、興味深い著作です。私は去年の夏購入し、やっと最近読み終わりました。読みづらいということと、読むのが辛い内容であるのは確かですが、知らなければいけない事実です。女性がそれだけひどい歴史を歩んできたか、私はできれば男性に読んでもらいたいと思います。この本はフランスを中心にかかれたもので、今の日本とは事情が違います。日本ももっともっとこういう犯罪に対して勇気を持って糾弾して行きたいと思います。
