日本古代史関係で手堅い著作を著していた著者だけに、期待して買ったが、期待外れも良いところだった。まず、これは史実を厳密に検証したものではなく、歴史小説に近い歴史読み物だということは買う前に認識しておくべきでしょう。広開土王を盲目的に英雄視した描き方で、名君だった王ならばこうしたであろう、そうであったに違いない、という都合の良い解釈と推測が殆ど。そして敵対した勢力は悉く文化程度が低いとか暗愚だと一方的に貶す。実際にそれほどの評価をするだけの十分な史料もないのに、このような空想的な英雄史観で描くのはどうかと思う。コラム等を読む限り、殆ど歴史知識のない読者を想定しているようだが、それならば一層のこと、慎重な記述を心掛けて欲しかった。

　ぺ・ヨンジュンが映画で演じることになった高句麗の広開土王（好太王）。歴史にある程度詳しい人なら名前くらいはよく聞くものだが、本書ではこの人物を中心にあまりなじみのない古代朝鮮史を描き出す。
　最近の文献学、考古学的研究をふまえ、高句麗の起源から新羅や百済、そして日本や中国とのわたりあいが描かれる。広開土王のダイナミックな生涯や高句麗の歴史は非常に興味ぶかい。
　内容的にはやや専門的なものも含まれるが、必ずしも古代史ファンでない人にもわかりやすく、時にはコラムなども使用して分かりやすく述べられている。
