とにかく衝撃度MAXのデビュー作。
ボストン州マサチューセッツ工科大学を卒業後デモテープを製作、ソニーレコードへ送る。

このデモが重役達を驚嘆させ、デビューが決定…

と、正に絵に書いたようなデビューサクセスに辿り着いた彼等だったが、作品はその出来事に相応しい完成度を誇っており、シングルのモア・ザン・フィーリングは大ヒットし、アルバムはなんと当時は700〜800万枚を越える超ビッグヒット(現在までの累計は1000万枚越え)となりツアーも大盛況。


当時はカンサス、ラッシュと共にハードプログレの先駆者として名を馳せた伝説級のロックバンドなのだ。


今考えると70年代は何ちゅう時代だ(笑)

「シンセサイザー使用せず」
「コンピュータ使用せず」

今もアメリカのミュージシャン達やハリウッド映画で使われるこの名ゼリフ、
「魂込めて、丁寧に、一生懸命やろう！」という意味合いでの、合言葉の様です。
30年も前にBOSTONが創ったこの言葉、
この１ｓｔアルバムを聴けば、「なるほど・・・」と唸るしかありません・・・

「産業ロック」などという分野に区分けされ、過小評価されている部分も有るようですが、
この「幻想飛行」は、「ロック史上の超名盤」と断言できます。

「名盤」だけに、今まで様々な高音質化が施されてきましたが、
今回のトム・ショルツ自身による16bitリマスタリングは、驚愕の高音質です。
個人的には、ＳＡＣＤ盤が最も優れていたと思いますが、
今回の通常のリマスターは、それをも超えていると感じます。

国内盤はＢＯＳＴＯＮサウンドの誕生秘話や、演奏者リストなど、
「噂」や「伝説」が、かなり明らかになるライナーノーツも、ちゃんと翻訳されてます。

そして、ロックを愛し、理解しようと思っている、若い音楽ファンの皆様、
是非、この機会に、ボストン・サウンドを体験してみて下さい。

１００メートル先からでも「あっ、ボストンだっ！」と判る、あのサウンド・・・
アナログ録音、アナログ・ミックスに徹底してこだわり創り上げられた、
重厚で繊細で透明感があり迫力あるあの「音」は、もはや「体験」です。

「本当に人の心を打つモノ」というのは、
便利な機械や、安直な電算機で作られるモノではない！、ということを、
今の若い音楽ファンの方々にこそ、判って頂ければ、
一ファンとして嬉しい限りです。

７６年発表。工学博士トム・シュルツ率いるアメリカン・プログレ・ハード・ロックの雄。専業ミュージシャンでない人が趣味で作った作品・・・とも言えるのではあるが、その作りは執拗に細部にこだわった徹底的完璧主義が貫かれており、楽曲も演奏も大凡のハード・ロックなど足下にも及ばないクオリティである。サウンドのこだわりは物凄く、ギターのエフェクターを自作してしまうほど。おまけにこの作品ではヴォーカル以外のほとんどのパートをトムが演奏。いわゆる一人多重の作品であるのだから恐れ入る。そしてこの人の凄いところはここまで徹底した音作りをしながら、そのサウンドは青空のように爽快で外に大きく広げられた窓のような開放感があることだ。そしてどこまでも気持ちの良いギター・サウンド。ハード・ロックに求められる心地良いギター・サウンドがギッシリと詰まっている・・・と言うかアルバム全てが聞いていて気持ちが良い。ひたすら重く、ジェットコースターのようなスピード感、美しいコーラスにハイ・トーンのヴォーカル・・・ボストンのアルバムを聞いていると様々な鬱憤が解放されていくような錯覚を覚えるほどた。ノー・シンセサイザーというこだわりも現代だからこそ重いと思う。産業ロックの草分けと言うある意味で不本意なレッテルもあるが、産業ロックがここまで素晴らしいのであれば、それもよかろう。３曲のヒット曲と８００万枚超えというセールスも納得の名作。しかし次作はもっと凄い・・・
