歴史に「もしも」はない。
けれど坂本竜馬を筆頭として、「もし」この人たちが明治を生きていたら日本はどんな変わったろうと思わせる幕末の戦乱期に倒れたつわもの達が数多くいる。
河井継之助のその中の一人になるような、後世の人々の心を揺さぶる人であった。
歴史の中で有名でない人を扱い、ここまで仕上げた作品はすばらしい。

人生観を変える一冊かもしれない。

下巻では中立を守りたかった継之助の思いとは裏腹に西軍と戦う事になってしまう。継之助の理想とした世界を作るために動いてきた結果が、長岡を焼き、継之助自身も途中で死んでしまう事になる。正直な所継之助が維新を生き延び、理想とした長岡公国を作ってほしかった、と思う気持ちが強い。そうなっていたら明治の時代でどのような存在になっていたか・・・。
巻末の司馬さん自身のあとがきと解説がいい。あとがきではこの作品で書きたかった思いをしることができるし、私が感じたものと筆者の思いはほぼ同じであると思えて満足できたし、解説では本編では書かれていない継之助の姿や長岡の継之助評を教えてくれるからだ。
別な見方をすると、継之助は中立にこだわるあまり、多くの犠牲を強いているともいえる。いくつかの場面で継之助に恩を受けた人たちはともかく、そうでない人にとっては引っ掻き回すだけ引っ掻き回して・・と腹立たしい思いのほうが強いに違いない。そんな別の評価も頭にいれると、彼の考える美徳を貫いた事がよかったのか、と思わせる。もっと大きな入れ物に入れるべき理想を長岡藩の中で完結させようとしたのが無理だったのではないか、と。長岡では決して高い評価ではないと言う継之助の本編では書かれていない部分を知ることは彼が決して英雄ではない、生身の人間を感じさせる。
「峠」では継之助という人を通して芯の通った人間の美しい部分が魅力的に書かれている。彼が美しくかっこよく見えるのは何があってもぶれない信念があるからだろう。藩の家老としての継之助の判断は結果的には無茶だったのかもしれないが、彼個人の考え方は見習いたい所。私自身も自分の基本はどこにあるのかをしっかり認識することがぶれない生き方につながるんだと強く感じた。

私は、本を読んで泣いた事はなかった。(あんまり読書をしないのも理由だけど…)
だけどこの「峠」を読んで泣いてしまった。しかも、悔し涙…。感動とか、泣ける、とかではなく無性に悔しくなって泣いてしまった。
一体どこの場面で、といえば「会津が戦場に長岡の五段梯子(藩印)を放った」ところだ。長岡を同盟軍に引き込むために…。

悔しくて泣いてしまった。
せっかく河井が中立を貫こうと働いている最中なのに、というのと、
まさか会津が…。というのが交ざって悔し涙してしまった。

いくら涙するといっても、所詮は他人の話で悔し涙するなんてまったく初めて。
私は長岡が地元なので、やっぱり私にも長岡人として骨の髄にしみ込んでいたのかなぁ…と思ってしまった。
文中にもあるように、「河井は悲しかったでしょうね。」
