1983年の『Life and Times of Michael K』（邦題『マイケル・K』）、さらに1999年の『Disgrace』（邦題『恥辱』）でブッカー賞の歴史始まって以来初のダブル受賞をした、南アフリカの作家J.M.クッツェーが少年時代を回想した作品。回想記ではあるが、主人公は三人称、それも時制は現在という設定。
学校では優等生に徹し、家では暴君のように振る舞う少年は、あまりに献身的な母親に依存しながらも反発を感じ、頼りない父を徹底して嫌悪する。性のめざめ、自分は何者か、父方の農場への憧れ、といったさまざまな感情のなかで揺れる少年時代を「内心のひだにまで分け入って繊細かつしたたかに探りあて、あざやかな、突き放したような文体で描ききった」傑作。
少年は1940年、ケープタウンで、オランダ系入植者アフリカーナーの父とドイツ系の母をもって生まれ、家庭内では英語を使う、という当時の南ア社会では完全にアウトサイダー的な家庭で育つ。
1948年にアフリカーナーを支持母体とする国民党が政権を握ると、民族を分離するアパルトヘイト政策をとり始め、白人社会も出身によってアフリカーナーと英国系の2つのグループに分けようとした。ケープタウンからアフリカーナーの多い内陸のヴースターへ引っ越した少年は、英語で学ぶクラスに編入されるが、アフリカーンス語で学ぶクラスへ編入されるのではないかという悪夢にさいなまれる。騒々しくて攻撃的な態度でのし歩き、ことあるごとにけんかをふっかけるアフリカーナー少年たち。そのなかへ放り込まれることになったら自殺する、と少年は思いつめる。
幸い、ふたたびケープタウンの寛容さと雑踏のなかにもどることができたが、次に待ち受けていたのは、弁護士を開業した父親の借財という悪夢だった。
ここに描かれた少年の50年後の姿が現在の作家クッツェーということになるのだが、その小説世界の原風景を彷彿とさせる、クッツェーファン待望の書でもある。邦題は『少年時代』。（森 望） --このテキストは、 ペーパーバック 版に関連付けられています。

著者について
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, on February 9, 1940, John Michael Coetzee studied first at Cape Town and later at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Ph.D. degree in literature. In 1972 he returned to South Africa and joined the faculty of the University of Cape Town. His works of fiction include Dusklands, Waiting for the Barbarians, which won South Africa’s highest literary honor, the Central News Agency Literary Award, and the Life and Times of Michael K., for which Coetzee was awarded his first Booker Prize in 1983. He has also published a memoir, Boyhood: Scenes From a Provincial Life, and several essays collections. He has won many other literary prizes including the Lannan Award for Fiction, the Jerusalem Prize and The Irish Times International Fiction Prize. In 1999 he again won Britain’s prestigious Booker Prize for Disgrace, becoming the first author to win the award twice in its 31-year history. In 2003, Coetzee was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
