この本は小村寿太郎そのひと人よりむしろ時代背景に重点が置かれている。特に、議会制民主主義の確立のため奔走する星亨の活躍が興味深い。戦争そのものは決して奨励されるものではないが、私心を捨てて国家のために戦う明治の人々の活躍には心を動かされるだろう。

　岡崎さんの本はどれも丁寧に書かれてありますね｡特にこの「・・・とその時代シリーズ」は、ご本人も言われているとおり「信用できる方々と意見をつき合わせて対論形式でここらヘンが妥当な線だろうという詰め方をして書いた。」と。一言一句が丁寧に書かれてあることが分かります｡寸分狂いが無いように、正に「巧みの技」のようです。正に客観的・冷静に性格に偏見を極力排した書き方になってますよね｡それには本当に感心しました｡「こういう書き方も有るんだな・・・」と。物事を本当に大局的に、敷衍して、何と言おうか高い視点から書かれてありますよね｡何処の国の人が読んでも参考になるような書き方になってます。本当に感心するし、とてもとても面白い本です｡

この本は小村よりむしろその時代に重点が置かれ、時代背景を知るのに役立つ。特に、議会制民主主義の確立に奔走した星亨の活躍は興味深い。戦争は決して奨励されるものではないが、明治の先人が私欲を捨てて運命を切り開いていく姿には心に訴えるものがあるだろう。
