本書は、『三国志演義』の翻訳で、長年にわたって定本とされてきた名訳でしょう。しかし最近は、井波(ちくま文庫)や渡辺(講談社)、安能(講談社文庫)による翻訳も文体が新しく読み易い。安能の訳書の解説(「はじめに」と「あとがき」)は、本書の小川による解説に劣らず参考になりますので一読をおすすめします。すこし古くなるが村上(角川文庫[分冊]、第三書館[合本])も優れています。

さて本書の内容ですが、底本としている版本が２つあります。基本的には現在もっとも流布している「毛本」を底本とし、「毛本」では削除されてしまった部分などを「弘治本」で補っています。小川は本書の第８巻のあとがきで「二本を折衷した形になった」と語っている。そのため、中国語の原書(毛本)と読み比べると相当の異同が!みられる。「毛本」にもっとも忠実と思われる井波の訳書と読み比べてみると良いだろう。

蛇足となるかもしれないが、『三国志平話』と『三国志演義』を混同している方もおられるようですが『三国志平話』は『三国志演義』よりも一時代ふるい本で、分量も十分の一程度であり、『平話』は『演義』よりもずっと「虚構」の度合いが大きく、おとぎ話的であると言われている本である。ゲームで有名な「コーエー」(光栄)より二階堂・中川による注訳書が出版されている。『三国志平話』は『三国志演義』の原典とも言える本なので興味のある方は読んでみるといいでしょう。

いわゆる三国志にはふたつあり、魏、蜀、呉の三国を統一した西晋時代に蜀の出身の歴史家陳寿により編纂された正史（王朝がまとめた正式な歴史書）としての『三国志』、そして後代の明の時代の人、羅貫中が正史と民間伝承を元に書いた小説としての『三国演義』がある（ちなみに『水滸伝』も彼の作である）。この岩波文庫版の全八巻の三国志は、小説の『三国演義』である。断末魔を迎える後漢末期、中国の危機を救おうと曹操、劉備、関羽、張飛、孫権らがそれぞれの野望を秘めて立ち上がった。物語は官渡の戦いで勝利し、華北を掌握し、後漢皇帝を傀儡化した曹操が活躍する前半、劉備が三顧の礼で名軍師の諸葛孔明と出会い、江南に軍を進め中国統一を目指す曹操の企図を赤壁の戦いで頓挫させ、劉備の遺志を継いで漢王朝再興のために尽力し、五丈原で没する後半に分かれる。その三国は孔明の好敵手の司馬仲達の孫で曹氏の魏から帝位を簒奪した司馬炎が、西晋を建国することで統一される。
