Book Description

R. Buckminster Fuller's Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, published in 1969, imagines our species as a crew, united by a shared fate, on a tiny spaceship traveling through infinity. It can be read even today as the most intelligent metaphor for thinking about humankind on this planet. Fuller accepted the challenge pre-sented by this metaphor, using his inventions and writings to contribute to the safe operations of Spaceship Earth.

この本はとても60年代に書かれたとは思えないほど、「今」でも通じる問題定義をしています。翻訳者の方も後書きで書いていますが、この時代にこれほどコンピュータについて述べているとは驚きです。 でも、何よりも大切なのはタイトル通り「宇宙船地球号」の乗員である我々のことについて考えることです。Ｈ・Ｇ・ウエルズ同様、先見の明がある人がいるものだと感心することしきりです。

本の内容は非常に面白かったのだが、
翻訳のせいか、（大変申し訳ないが）ものすごく読みにくかった。
新訳が出ることを期待している。

フラーの創始したSynergesticsは、今や物理学や、脳の仕組みの解明などに積極的に応用されている。宇宙船地球号というのは巷間で言われているような、皆仲良くしましょうというような能天気な考え方ではないことが本書を読めば分かる。テクノロジーの発展で、今や人類は生計のために生き、兵器や金儲けなどのためにあくせくする必要がない、そういう時代になっていることに９９％の人達が気がついていない。そのため、知能を他人を出し抜くことに、つまりのカンニングに使っている。そうではないオプションがもうあるのである。今や人類の長年の夢を実現し、他人を搾取することなく豊かな生活が営めるテクノロジーが「既に」あるのである。将来の話ではなく、この本が書かれた時点である。それを知ることができるようになるのは、数学を理解し、使えるようになることである。更に、宇宙をデカルト座標でみるのではなく、彼の世界地図がその基礎としている８次元という自然がとっている次元でみることである。この本を読んでから、彼の著作Synegesticsをこの次に読み進むような人々がこの日本に多くなればなる程、下品な金持ち日本人は少なくなっていくのではないか、と思う。
