急逝した名優、天知茂さんの跡という重責を受け継いで、名探偵明智小五郎を演じたのは、こちらも名優北大路欣也さんです。
天知さんの明智と異なり、外車に乗り、バードウォッチングが趣味という役柄ですが、これもまた良い味を出しています。
原作は、江戸川乱歩の「仮面の恐怖王」ですが、内容的には「怪人二十面相」です。当時の土曜ワイド劇場にしては、非常に珍しく女性のヌードシーンは一切ありません。ま、怪人二十面相には不要ですけどね。
色々な人間に返送する恐怖王と、それに立ち向かう明智小五郎、東名高速でのカーチェイス（？）など20年以上前のドラマとは思えない面白さです。
事件の結末は・・・・？一見の価値有りです。
それにしても、明智小五郎の返送は無理がありすぎると思いますが・・・・（笑）

　天知茂の明智小五郎を継ぐ、北大路欣也の明智小五郎シリーズ第１作目。パソコンを駆使し、バードウォッチングやスキューバダイビングをする知的でスマートな明智に変わっている。怪盗・恐怖王をめぐって起こる殺人事件の謎を、北大路の明智が解明する。お約束の変装シーンもちょっとした趣向が凝らされているし、「美女」は夏樹陽子だし、まあ、第１作目としては合格。また、それまでの天知のイメージを一新したことも視聴者には新鮮だったのでは。
　とにかく、天知茂の明智が好きな人も充分楽しめる作品である。
