2005年の映画ですが日本での上映は2008年。本編では先の話として2003年という年数に触れていることからもっと前に撮られたかもしれません。これは特典映像として監督が語っていたのですが、スタッフが警察に逮捕されたりテープを没収されたり苦難がありながら4年間という年月をかけて作られたドキュメンタリー映画です。急成長を遂げる中国の経済発展を支える陰の部分を、深くえぐっています。ジーンズ工場に勤めるのは、ほとんどが田舎から出稼ぎにきた女子工員。わずか7円の時給で深夜2時や3時までの勤務は当たり前。わずかな給料からお湯代や食事代を引かれ、その給料さえ払われるのは経営者の気分次第。1分単位の遅刻や作業の遅れですぐ発生する罰金。そんな過酷な労働条件でも辞めれないのは田舎の家族に仕送りする義務感だけ。法律を守らず14歳の女子でも雇い、工員を泥棒呼ばわりして給料もごまかす経営者はベンツが愛車の元警察署長。見てすぐに気づくのですが、本作が追う女子工員の主役で浅田舞似のジャスミンちゃんの説明が全部セリフ調。おかしいなと思ったら、最後のテロップで全て納得できました。本編は特典映像での監督のトークが一対をなしますので、全て見てほしいと思います。ここで取り上げられた会社などまだ条件は良い方だと教えられると、わたしたちはいったい何をすれば良いのか深く考えさせられます。こんな労働条件で形作られた中国経済に日本の製造業など100％かなわないと断言できます。可哀想というのもありましたが、少ない自由な時間と給料のなかでも楽しみを見つけ出そうとする女の子たちがいじらしくなります。

ほんの10〜15年ほど前には考えられなかったほど安価に、
あまりにも多くの物が手に入るようになっている。
企業努力で？流通システムの変革によって？
いや、それだけでは無いはずだ。
しわ寄せとして、きっと誰かが憂き目に遭っているに違いない。
この映画ではその「誰かの憂き目」の一端を目にすることができた。

登場する少女たちは、受け入れるしか無い劣悪な生活の中でもたくましく生きている。
健気ささえ感じさせるが、この泥沼はおそらく一生を通して変わらない。
観ていてその将来に絶望を感じてしまった。

我々が安価な商品を手にする一方で、
近くて遠い隣国では何が起こっているのかを垣間見た気がする。

併せておいしいコーヒーの真実 [DVD]を観れば、
同じテーマへの理解が一層深められる。
