読み始めたら一気に読ます。宮部みゆきの力量は健在。「震える岩」でも感じたことであるが、レギュラー入りを果たした右京之介は以前より存在感は増しているものの、せっかくの算学がまだ活かし切れていない。使いようによっては非常に独創的な探偵になると思うのですが。お初の霊感と彼の算学で世を震撼させる大事件を解決する、そんな物語を第３段では期待しています。
今回は「美しさとは何か」がテーマである。残念なことに宮部に欠落しているものを発見してしまった。それは人を惑わす色香です。どうもお初ちゃんはまだまだ子供みたいで、そのことが作品全体の描写にも影響しているみたいです。本当は今回の妖怪、妖しい美を描くには絶好のチャンスだったのですが。

霊験お初シリーズの長編第二作。
実直な下駄職人の、嫁入り前の娘が消えた。神隠しと言われる中、娘の父親は自分が殺した、と自供し、自殺を遂げる・・・。
その顛末の不審さにお初が呼ばれる。お初が算術の右京之介と調査を始めたさなか、２件目の失踪事件が起こった・・・。

赤穂浪士事件を宮部流に見事に再構築してみせたシリーズ前作「震える岩」ほどの仕掛けはないが、エンターテーメントとして本作はひけをとらない。

大部な作品だが、テンポよい語りと、見事描きこまれた登場人物たちの演じる人情劇も見事（お初の兄にして岡っ引きの六蔵の手下や一膳飯屋の雰囲気や、お初と右京之介などなど人物造形・描写が絶品！）。今回はかわいい（気風もよい）マスコットも登場する。

早々にタネが割れてしまい、中盤の展開がややだれ気味っぽく感じられる部分もないわけではなかったが、最後まで飽かせない。宮部みゆきが語る極上の時代小説をたんのうして欲しい。お勧め。

宮部さんの、時代物はどれも面白い物が多いけど、これは、大好きなシリーズ。１のが内容は濃いような気がするけれど、これもひけをとらず面白いと思います。それはやっぱり猫キャラのおかげもあるかな？鉄がかわいい！出てくるキャラたちも、みんなすごい個性があって読んでいて楽しいです。結構分厚いけどいっきに読めちゃいます。次回作がもしあるなら、それも是非読みたい。

かなり面白かった。特に猫の鉄のキャラが秀逸。（エピローグにもにんまり）右京之介との掛け合いも悪くない。
