井上 靖
1907‐1991。旭川市生れ。京都大学文学部哲学科卒業後、毎日新聞社に入社。戦後になって多くの小説を手がけ、1949(昭和24)「闘牛」で芥川賞を受賞。’51年に退社して以降は、次々と名作を産み出す。「天平の甍」での芸術選奨(’57年)、「おろしや国酔夢譚」での日本文学大賞(’69年)、「孔子」での野間文芸賞(’89年)など受賞作多数。’76年文化勲章を受章した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　情報がネットワークを通じて自在に行き来する現代からは想像も出来ないことだが、１３００年の遥かなる昔に生きた人びとにとって、何かを学び、或いは伝えることは、人生の全てを費やし、命がけで成し遂げる価値のある、文字通り“一代の事業”だったのだ。

　東の果ての島国に仏法を伝えるため、不帰の覚悟で海を渡った「鑑真」。
　そして、鑑真招来のための命を賭けた「栄叡」。
　人生の全てを日本に送るための経典の書写に捧げた「業行」。
　そんな彼らの意思を、運命のように受け継がざるを得なかった（主人公）「普照」。

　彼らの姿を、簡潔に、されど情感豊かな描き出す作者の文章は、相変わらず見事の一言。浅田次郎氏が「歴史に敬意を払いつつ、見てきたような大嘘をつく」というように評していたが、言いえて妙である。そんな文豪の筆致を存分に味わえる傑作である。

今、奈良平城京の跡を訪ねるとそこにはただ荒涼とした草原があるばか
りである。遣唐使船で唐に渡った4人の留学僧、戒律を日本にもたらし
た鑑真の壮烈な生涯の出発と終着点がここにあったかと思うと万感満ち
てくる。「城破れて山河あり」の境地である。

歴史小説(伝奇小説は含まない)というものは「史的事実」を出発点にし

ながら「史的事実を伝える」ということには留まらず、作者の幻想のフ
ィルターを通して描かれる。この作品は登場人物に作者の余計な感情・
分析(失礼)を交えず、淡々とまるで老人が昔話をするかのように枯れた
文体で記されている。

井上靖氏の歴史小説は全てそうだが、夢中になって読み続けるうち想像

は遥かな歴史の世界に飛んでいる。井上氏の歴史小説の魅力はまさにそ
こにあるのかもしれない。

20年以上読もう読もうと思って何度も挫折し遂に読み終えた記念にレビューします。挫折ってことはあんまり面白くないのかというと、井上さんの他作品よりも難解で、日本を出発するまでがノレなかったけど、その後は問題無かったです。（注釈が付いてる本って何度も読まないと飲み込めない時があってこの話もそう）
でも内容はとても興味深い話で、人生を賭けて唐に渡り運命に翻弄され、流転の末に高僧鑑真を日本に招いた留学僧のお話です。何としても鑑真を日本へ、と使命に燃える普照。幾度も死線を超え、それでも彼を動かすものは何なのか。そして高僧鑑真の不屈の精神にも感動します。すでに高い地位にあり高齢な彼が、海に沈む危険をおかして日本へ来てくれた事、遠い昔話とはいえ感慨深いものを感じます。
