子供の頃、毎月楽しみにしていた学研の科学。既に三十路をすぎましたが、昔を懐かしく思い購入してみました。今号の付録は蒸気エンジン。組み立て時間は小一時間。燃料用アルコールを別途購入し、早速ランプに点火。マニュアル通りにやるもエンジンの動きが悪い。そこで、マニュアルにはありませんでしたが、エンジンのシリンダーとボイラー接合部、シリンダー内とクランクシャフトに電気カミソリ用のオイルを塗ったところエンジンの滑りが良くなり蒸気の心地よい音を奏でながらエンジンが勢いよく回転を始めました。ちょっとしたことですが、童心に返りました。エンジンに興味がある方は楽しめると思いますよ。

創刊から全てを購読しましたが、個人的には一番好きな内容、蒸気機関からジェットエンジン、スターリングエンジン等などを網羅していました。たぶん付録も価格以上の内容だと思います。ただ現物はもう手元に存在していません。なぜなら毎号購入の翌日には開封していない付録ごと友人の息子にあげています。いい歳をした大人が読んでも十分に楽しめる内容は「子供騙し」ではなく「大人騙し」なので、むしろ小・中学生が色々なものに興味を持つきっかけ、好奇心の入り口としても最高の資料です。友人は付録作りに夢中になっている息子をサポートしているそうです。今回の付録は蒸気エンジンなので必要な燃料のメタノールを友人が印鑑持参でドラッグストアーで購入し、そして息子がメタノールの危険性を知るに到り、その物の恐ろしさのあまり一所懸命に作った付録の稼動を諦めかけていると言ったオチまで付きました。「大人の科学」が書籍名ですが、小学生からかなりの高齢者まで十二分に楽しめます。特に子供がいるお父さんにとってはコミュニケーションツールとしても最適です。実を言うと毎号友人の息子にあげるのは「ちょっと惜しいかな？いや、かなり！」が本音です。

ペットボトルロケットやエアーエンジンの場合は早すぎてじっくり観察
ができませんでした。蒸気エンジンの模型では親子や兄弟であれこれ楽しめました。ただ組み立てや駆動部に工夫がもう少し欲しかった。
小学２年生が中心になって組み立て成功しました。アルコールは記述より多く使用しないとうまくいきませんでした。
