時代はおそらく100年くらい前、舞台はドイツの小さな町と森。少年カスパールと親友ゼッペルが、悪名高い大泥棒ホッツェンプロッツを相手に、おばあさんのコーヒー挽きを取り返すために、少年らしい勇気と知恵で活躍するお話。 魔法使いや妖精が絡んできて、少年達の冒険は、どんどん思いがけない大冒険になっていきます。

ドイツ独特の魔術を含んだ空気が全編に流れているのが心地よく、更に軽快な話のテンポ、そして憎みきれないユーモラスな悪漢たちの個性が、読者を本の世界にぐいぐい引き込んでいきます。ドイツトウヒの神秘的な森の中で繰り広げられるこのお話は、少年少女だけではなく、大人でも楽しめるものです。優しく素朴なドイツ文化の描写には、是非ご注目ください。

ドイツの昔ながらの民話・伝説要素と、少年の小気味良い活劇要素が、見事に融合された作品です。

この本の作者プロイスラーは小学生の先生でした。子供相手に彼の考えたお話をしているうちに、この本が作られたそうです。文章が上手なので大変楽しい内容に仕上がっています。
ホッツェンプロッツは大泥棒ですが、憎めないキャラクターでもあります。こしょうピストルなどかわいい小道具もたくさんでてきます。

読書感想文でこんな楽しい本を読んだら、スラスラ書けそう。
お子様にさしあげる前に、ぜひ大人からお読みになってください。
あまりのおもしろさに、ついつい、人に勧めたくなりますよ。
人情味あふれる大どろぼうホッツェンプロッツ 。読んだあとは、幸せな気持ちに包まれる、最高傑作の児童文学書です。

小学生の時に読みました。もうとにかく面白い！
母親の｢ご飯よ~？｣という声に、渋々本を置いた記憶がよみがえります。

１０年後、ドイツの本屋さんでこの馴染みの｢どろぼう顔｣を見て大喜び。
ドイツ人の友人いわく、｢私も小さい頃読んだー♪ドイツでは定番よ！｣
とのことでした。何だか嬉しくなりました。

私も自分が子供をもったら、読み聞かせてあげようと思ってます。
