「私」と円紫師匠のシリーズで一番好きな本です。

「朧夜の底」「六月の花嫁」では「私」が子供から大人へとたどたどしくも成長していく姿にこちらが気恥ずかしくなる気分で読みました。

確かこの頃は北村さんをまだ女性だと思ってたのかな？
（私もご本人を知り、衝撃を受けた一人です）
どうしてこんな風に「私」の機微が描けるのかと驚いたものです。

そして「輝く存在」ではないけど姉妹の姉である私は「夜の蝉」で姉に共鳴して、思わず妹に電話してしまいました。

円紫師匠と「私」のシリーズの2作目です。このシリーズはどの巻にも表紙に「私」が同じポーズで立っている姿が描かれていて、「私」が少しずつ大人になって行く様子が描かれているのが良い味を出しています。内容の方も「私」の人間的成長をテーマにした3作が収録されています。

このシリーズは読後感がほのぼのとしているところが魅力なのですが、それは必ずしも殺人事件が出てこないことに由来するわけではなさそうです。殺人が出てこないけれども、人間の悪意というものはしっかりと登場します。本作では3編のうち2編までもが人間の悪意から生まれる謎です。にもかかわらず、悪意というものから逃れない人間という哀れな生き物をいとおしむような作者の視点が感じられることによって、読者にさわやかな読後感を与えるのでしょう。

落語家の円紫師匠が探偵役のシリーズで共通している事ですが、
作品を読むにあたって、あまり大きなエネルギーを必要とはしません。

それでいて、ライトノベルではなく、強固な骨格を有しています。
軽妙な文体に加えて、推理対象が他愛ないものだからかも知れません。
ある作品では、書店の本の中身が、故意に入れ替えられている理由を推理します。

また、一人称で語られる、学生である「私」は、前作「空飛ぶ馬」に比べて、内部から少し変化します。
つまり、この年齢の時期にありがちな、微妙な心理的な揺れが、鮮やかに描かれています。
この部分は、本書の、特筆すべき魅力の一つです。

著者の感性は独特です。
それは、常に心地良いばかりではありません。

しかし、本書を流れる空気は、総じて、心地良いです。
