　なぜ私たちは生きるのか。このような問いへの答えが今ほど切実に求められている時代はないだろう。「夜と霧」は単なる収容所生活のレポートではない。圧倒的な絶望の中で生きた人々のたどりついた人間の最後のこころのとりでの記録である。

　衣食住だけでなく人間としての尊厳さえも奪われた収容所での生活でフランクルが仲間と夕日を眺め、その美しさに心奪われる場面がある。 　人間はそのような状況でも「こころの世界」、「内面的な世界」を失うことがないということは、そのころ悩みを抱えていた私にとって大きな希望となり、苦悩への答えとなった。

　わたしたちがどんなに最悪の状況でも「その状況に対する態度を決める自由」だけは決して失われないというフランクルの言葉はさまざまな問題を抱える今の日本に生きる私たちにとって力強い励まし、１つの答えとなるに違いないと思う。

　人間の究極の「こころの世界」をえがくこの本はすべての人にすすめたい一冊である。

本書は第二次世界大戦中、ナチスドイツによって行われたユダヤ人大量虐殺-ホロコースト-を生き抜いたユダヤ人精神科医の記録である。
筆者は恐ろしいほど冷静に収容所に連れてこられた人々の精神的変化を書き綴っている。
しかし、最も驚くべきことは、彼も同じ状況に居たということである。
極限の状況に居ながら周囲の人々や状況を観察したり、論文の為のメモを取り続けたりという行為を行っている。
毎日を生きることで精一杯であったはずである。
生き残れる保障は全くといっていいほどなかったはずである。
彼を支え続けたものは一体なんであろうか？

10年ぶりに本書を読み返してみて、10年前の自分では若すぎて理解できなかった部分が改めて深い感慨として襲ってきた。
また10年後読み直せば、また新たな感動を与えてくれるであろう。いつまでも読み返していきたい一冊である。

アウシュビッツがどのような所だったかは、知らない人はいないだろう。しかし、具体的に映像などで見ることと活字を読んで想像することは当然ながら違う。
本文もさることながら、ラッセル卿の文と巻末の写真は、これだけでも本書を買う価値があると思わせるものだ。新版にはないので、本書をキープしておくことにした。

本書は、いろいろな読み方ができる本と思う。読者の読んだ時の状況、年齢、経験などにより、同じ人でも全然違う感想を持つだろう。それほど、奥が深い本といえる。そして、ショッキングな本ともいえる。
本書の感想に、正解はない。もっと言えば、全部が正解である。
