恩田陸さんの作品は本当に好きなんです。この作品は解説でも触れられているように興味深い意図があったのでしょう。しかし、長すぎる引用がストーリーと必ずしもマッチせず空回りしているような気がする。
記憶が改竄されやすいという事実は脳の働きを理解していれば不思議ではないだろう。しかし、事件が本当に起こったのか起こらなかったのかという作品の根幹部分で齟齬をきたしているような気がする。
いってみれば夜のピクニックの全内容が単なる記憶の揺らぎといわれるような思いがする。巻末のインタビューが興味深くそれで何とか星三つか。

恩田陸は非常にオマージュが好きな作家だが、今作ほど強烈に、大胆に取り入れた作品は無い。ふんだんに「元」が引用されている。

アラン・レネ監督映画『去年マリエンバートで』が今作のオマージュ元で、引用文が繰り返し繰り返し本文に登場する。

さて、この小説は「人の記憶、妄想と現実」がテーマであると思われる。各章毎に殺人事件が起こるのだが、次の章では記憶がキャンセルされ前章で死んだ人物は蘇っている、というような表現がなされる。

しかし…これは記憶が違っているのか、忘れているのか、現実なのか、妄想なのか。そういう境が曖昧になって…

ところで、この小説は各章を「第〜変奏」としているが、上手いなぁと何章か進んで思った。変奏曲とは主題といくつかの変奏からなる楽曲の事で、今作では基盤となる主題を用意し、各変奏で内容を変えていく、という風に表現している。

これを見ると最新作「中庭の出来事」（０６年１２月）にも近いものがあり、あちらの方がより込み入っていて年月を感じた。まあ、今作は「登場人物の記憶〜」がテーマで、あちらは「読者の記憶」にテーマが置かれているのだろうから、作風を含めて受け取り方は全く違うのだが。

「自分の幸運を享受しつつも、心のどこかでそのことに物足りなさを感じることがある。そう感じること自体、傲慢で贅沢なことだと承知しつつも、人間とはそういう生き物なのだから仕方がない。」　本文１２８ページより

映画をモチーフに用いた作品はこれまでも数作みられました。
本来この手法は半端に映画のイメージに引きずられるので不得手なのですが、今回あまりに大胆な挿入でかえって目につきませんでした。
出版当時はタイトルと装丁が印象的ではあるものの特別引っ掛かるものはありませんでしたが、今回改めて振り返ると意外なことに数ある恩田作品のなかでも興奮してしまう部類に入ってきてしまいました。
秋のホテル、サロンでの読めない会話、二転三転する事実。
目の眩むような秋に読む美しい小説です。
