16歳の孤児マリアンは、後見人から突然、ある男の保護下で暮らすことになると伝えた。
暴力的な後見人から逃れることとなった、マリアンは、今度の人は優しい老紳士だろうと思っていたが。
彼女を引き取った、ピーターデズモントは野性的で放蕩者を感じさせる男だった。
デズモンドはポーカーで以前の後見人とポーカーで賭けをし、掛け金がなんとマリアンとなっていたのだ。
デズモントはマリアンを当然高級娼婦と思いこみ、彼女と対面したその日なんと寝室へ連れて行ってしまう。
涙ながら怖ろしいほど抵抗したマリアンを見たデズモンドは初めてマリアンの現状を知り、愕然とする。
それから二人の奇妙な関係が始まっていく。

面白かったです。
最初からヒロインがヒーローに迫られるので、あやや・・・っと思っていましたが、
必死のヒロインの抵抗がヒーローを闇から救い出しました。
ヒロインと会ってからのヒーローは賭博士からなんと文学教授に転職！
ずいぶん立派になりましたことで・・・。
途中ヒロインの思い込みと頑固なプライドが少し目に付きましたが、
今迄の過去を考えると、ヒーローを誤解してしまうのも無理もないかな。
しかし最後はヒロイン良くがんばってくれました。
今迄の誤解を詫びるようにヒーローの為に体張って戦ったヒロイン素敵です。
この作家の作品はこれが初めてなので、べつのもあれば読んでみたいと思います。

ヒーローの過去は放蕩息子で父親から勘当されています。そして被後見人の少女を娼婦と思い
抱こうとしますが、涙を流しながらやめてという少女の声を聞き、思い違いに気づいてやめますがその16歳の少女に恋をしてしまいます。そのあとヒーローのやっていることをヒロインは
誤解して犯罪を犯していると思いヒーローの愛をうけいれることができません。本当は自分もひかれているのに。そして当時としては珍しくヒーロにすすめられヒロインは大学へ入ります。そして事件がおこります。最後までたいくつせず読めました。
