本書は初級日本語コースのための教科書ではありません。また、いわゆる文法参考書でもありません。この本は、言ってみれば、初級日本語学習者のための「新種の本」です。日本語を日本語のコースで勉強するにしても、自学自習するにしても、学習者はそれぞれの文法要素を積み上げ式に勉強する機会は与えられますが、日本語のシステムが理解できるような学習指導を受けたり情報を与えられたりすることは通常はありません。一般的な文法参考書は個々の文法要素の理解を深めてくれるかもしれませんが、そうしたやり方では、しばしば説明が複雑になってしまい、また日本語のシステムの全体像を見失ってしまいます。『基礎日本語文法教本』は、これまでの文法の学習法が共通して抱えるこうした問題を克服した新しいタイプの本です。この本では、学習者がさまざまな文法構造(文型)の使い方に習熟し、個々の文法事項を正しく理解しながら、その一方で日本語の文法システムについての理解を深めることができるような学習材料が提供されています。

The grammar books are used to be boring and difficult especially when they target any language based on characters, but this book is really unique and very enjoyable to read Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar. You are not required to know the Japanese characters (kanji). The examples are given in hiragana and katakana written below every kanji so that a gradual learner of kanji can benefit as well. The strength of this book is that it provides an intuition to the Japanese grammar; you really start feeling this language and understanding it as a system. This book is for a beginner containing a final advanced chapter equivalent to level 3 of the Japanese Proficiency Test. I would recommend having this book to any learner of this language even of advanced stage because it examines the Japanese grammar from a very different non-standard angle.

This book teaches through example - which is the necessary way to learn! I think this is the most helpful book you can buy - although you may want a standard textbook for deeper explanations about grammar (or find some of the great websites that do the same thing). I do find it ridiculous, though, that the used copies of this book are >150% more expensive on Amazon than the new copies in Japan (though part of this is of course due to the current low yen).
