内容紹介

火野葦平の小説「土と兵隊」を「五人の斥候兵」に続いて、田坂具隆が監督した戦争をテーマにした名作である。昭和十四年に日活多摩川映画として製作されたが、終戦と共に、GHQ(アメリカ占領軍)に没収され、後年返還された映画である。輸送船により、敵地に上陸した日本軍の一部隊、玉井伍長以下十三名の玉井隊の過酷な戦いを通して、戦争の悲惨さを克明に描いており、危険が待ち構えていると知りながら、命令に従い前進する玉井隊、次々と敵の銃弾に命を落とす同胞を満足に弔うことも出来ずに、それでも前進する玉井隊。戦争を知らない世代にも見てもらいたい映画である。

この映画は中国大陸で戦った、日本陸軍兵を映像で見るのには最高の作品だろう。
日華事変中の作品であるから、映画を見る「地方」（銃後の人々）への説明的な部分もあり、日本陸軍を研究するには格好の素材である。
特に『ウインドトーカーズ』や『シン・レッド・ライン』など、最近の映画から入った初心者に良いと思う。
（が、知識が少ないと面白くないかも知れない（笑））

映画は杭州湾上陸を控え、高級指揮官から分隊まで上から順繰りに命令伝達される所から始まる。
伝達される内容が、階級により変化していくのも見所となろう。
物語は伍長の指揮する歩兵一分隊を中心に描かれるが、手榴弾、重擲弾筒、MG（重機）分隊、大隊砲戦砲隊（繋駕）、工兵の破壊筒、爆薬投射機、浮舟式歩兵橋までも登場し、まるで演習のような理想的（笑）戦闘シーンが連続する。
主役の分隊も、常に班長に十一年式軽機手と弾薬手が付いて回り、歩兵分隊の基本戦闘法を教えてくれる。
珍しい事にMGには九四式照準眼鏡（潜望鏡）が付けられ、稜線射撃を加えているのも見所の一つ。
撮影には実包も使われており、小火器に興味のある方にもお勧め出来るだろう。

当然役者が兵隊を演じているのだが、当時の大人は兵役や学校の軍事教練で兵隊の基本を身につけている為、80年代以降戦争映画のような「ありえなさ」は存在しない。
特に小銃安全装置の手慣れた操作などは、戦後製映画ではなかなか見られない。
（戦中世代が役者の時代は、戦後製でもしっかりと再現されていた）
この辺りの考証は、最近の日本作品では望むべくもなく、中国製の最近作『南京』などより明らかに劣っているのは嘆かわしい。

私はこの映画が好きで10回以上観ているが、検閲された作品な為、内容は多少差し引いて観る必要もあるだろう。
ともあれ、「野戦の兵隊さん」を観るには（値段も安いし）最高の作品とは言える。
班長殿、一番風呂に入れなくてお気の毒。

日本の中国侵略は無論肯定できない歴史だが、この映画を全否定するには躊躇する見るべき内容を持つまじめな作品であるーこの映画に対する戦後の態度は大方こんなところらしい。「場面の多くは日本軍の大部隊が疲労困憊しながら果てしもない泥道を歩き続けるという映画（佐藤忠男）」である。帝国陸軍の悪逆は影すら見せず、兵たちはいずれも優しく潔い好人物ばかりに見える。十五年戦争半ば頃の話である、真偽のほどは分からない。「七人の侍」の七郎次（加東大介）の「戦で走れなくなったら死ぬときだ」という台詞をふと思い出した。兵卒は銃を担ぎ背嚢を負いひたすら歩く。将校は馬に乗るだけ。日本軍の将校（特に高級将校）の生き残り率は高かったのでは？と変な思いがよぎる。ビデオにも「積ん読」の語が使えるなら、これはしばらく積ん読でもいいから買う価値がある映画史上の一つの名画であろう。
