前半は、いろんな天才がいかに子供のときから本を沢山読んでいたかとか本を沢山読むことが重要かとかの説明であり、後半は実際の中学入試の現状やテクニックが書いてある。
本を沢山読んだから天才なのではなく、天才だから本を沢山読めたのに違いないから前半はあまり意味が無いように見える。後半は中学受験には多少参考になる話が書いてある。

* 学校の質は入試問題でわかる
* 良質な物語問を出すのは、麻布/武蔵/双葉/栄光
* 良質な随筆問を出すのは、巣鴨/灘/筑駒/筑波附属/神戸女学院/ラサール/女子学院
* 良質な論説文を出すのは、慶應中等/開成/青山/海城/駒場東邦

要するに有名校は国語教育も多分しっかりしてるということなのだろう。

論説文の解き方の例として「本書のまとめ」が書いてあったのは面白かった。どんな本でも、まとめがしっかり書いてあれば、購入の参考にしたり後で内容を思い出したりするのに便利だろうと思った。

ハウツー本を評価するとき最も重視するのは、有用なテクニックがどれだけ集められているか、それがどれだけ使えるかということ。本書には天才のエピソードは満載であるが、一般の人がどれだけそれを使いこなせるかとなると心許ない気がする。逆に、読んでいていいなと思ったのは、本の読み方に関すること。単に字面を追い、理解するだけでなく、批評を加えるべきこと、またそのテクニックを示している。自身でもこうした読み方を繰り返していけば、かなり知的な発展を遂げることが出来るだろうなとの期待感をもって読了した。
