文庫本ながら上下巻そろえると１，０００円を超える大著。全体が時系列に沿っているので、下巻は比較的最近の出来事。議員生活２５周年の表彰と同時に辞するまでがテンポよく展開する。同時に、ロッキード事件の発覚に端を発して自民党の５５年体制がどう崩壊していくかが客観的に書かれていて興味深い。世はちょうどバブル経済への突入時期。ある意味、日本全体が熱狂していた時代になにを失ったのかを考えるための傍証としての価値もある。そして東京都知事へ。１人の人間である前に政治家である著者の理念と理想があますところなく描かれ、共感へと誘う。

混沌の現代世界情勢において、ニュースや活字媒体による一方的なマス報道が、世界情勢事象の考察における大衆の理解を複雑化している、最早、現代世界において国家間での国際関係論や民族・宗教問題論は意味をなさなし体を成していない、国家と政府を隠れ蓑にして、地球上のあらゆる地域に緊張状態や関係を創出し、己たちの利益獲得のために戦争や紛争を引き起こす、あくどい集団がいる、恐るべきは、この地球上に張り巡らされたグローバルな資本主義経済体制での独占利益獲得集団・システムが有機的に無機的に稼動している現代世界市場経済独占市場においては、かつてのプラトンの唱えた国家論は、すでに理想にしか過ぎない、現代国家は国民の為にあらず、国家の国益のもとに一部特権階級にとって都合のいい国家運営がなされてきただけである、その意味では著者　石原慎太郎氏の述べる国家なる幻影はプラトンの理想を求めながらも現実の政治の世界では、それとは真逆の国家支配が世界中で歴史を繰り返されてきた事を論証した、名著です
