昭和20年、兵庫県飾磨市(現・姫路市)生まれ。慶応義塾大学文学部卒業後、広告代理店、料理屋などで働きながら小説家を目指す。平成5年に『鹽壷の匙』で三島由紀夫賞と藝術選奨文部大臣新人賞、平成9年に『漂流物』で平林たい子文学賞、平成10年に『赤目四十八瀧心中未遂』で直木賞を受賞。平成13年には「武蔵丸」で川端康成文学賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

車谷氏の作品は読んだこともないし、当座他の小説作品を読む予定もないのですが、当方四国出身のこともあって、思わず手を出してしまいました。四国八十八ヶ所を2ヵ月半かけて回った日記風の文章で、非常に読みやすく、ボリュームも140ページほどなので、あっという間に読み終わります。

他の八十八ヶ所本と比べて良いところは、お遍路さんや四国の風物を変に美化したりしていないところ。徳島はゴミが多いとか、俗世の欲が抜けない巡礼者が多いとか、私小説作家ならではの率直な物言いには、四国出身者として思わず同感。これくらいストレートに指摘してくれる人がいるのはありがたい気がします。一方で、道中で受けた親切、遍路宿の美味しい料理、美人の女将、美しい景色などには称賛を惜しんでいないあたり、バランスも取れています。要するに、四国八十八ヶ所だって「現世」だということです。

全体に即物的で、抹香臭さは皆無なので、「ありがたい話」を期待する向きには別の八十八ヶ所本をお薦めしますが、独自の個性と実用性（？）を持った面白い巡礼期になっていると思います。

世界中どこでも気軽に旅行が可能となった現在ほど、紀行といわれる文章が氾濫している時代はかつてなかったでしょう。
作家からブロガーにいたるまで、ありとあらゆる人が旅行記を書いています。
しかし、読むに値する紀行文は、その急増ぶりと反比例して、ほとんどなくなっている。
そういう状況の中で、本書は数少ない珠玉の紀行になりえています。
なにより飾り気のない文章の中に、遍路の原点たる聖なる姿が見えます。
一見、ただのメモにも見えそうな短い表現には、率直な感想と的確な描写がちりばめられ、さすが第一級の文学者だと唸らせます。
21世紀初頭の日本（四国）をきちんと記録したという点でも特筆されます。
ここ数年に書かれた紀行の中で最高傑作だと思います。

　みんな極楽へ行きたいから四国巡礼をするという。二十五歳の時から私小説を書いて、身の周りの人をさんざん傷つけてきたので、少しは謝罪したいので、妻について巡礼に出たともいう。お遍路さんの中には百回以上来たという人もある。自家用車で楽をして何回回っても極楽には行けないだろうと思う。自分たちのように歩き遍路の人は一割ほどで、九割は楽をしたい人。
　八十八ヶ所で一番標高の高いのは六十六番雲辺寺（９１０ｍ）からの下り坂で考える。「作家というのはつくづく厭な商売だ。人間の醜さ、浅ましさだけを見詰め続けて来た」もちろん、世には崇高な人が少数いる。無欲の人で、哲学の基本を教えていただいたという。

遍路五十首（高橋順子）「お四国の固き大地に御杖つきテムポ正しく長吉歩く」
