11月５日深夜の「朝ナマ」で勝谷誠彦が突然この本を取り出して、チベットのことを話しだしたので、翌日買って読んでみた。第２次大戦後、アジア・アフリカの多くの国が独立したが、チベットはそのころ中国によって独立を奪われた。そういうことはなんとなく知っていたが、中国のやり方は、ヒットラーもかくや、と思われるくらい残虐なものだ。この少女は、たぶん何もわからずに独立運動に参加し、２０歳過ぎまでの１０年くらいを監獄で過ごすうちに、自らを鍛え、成長させたのだろう。胸を打ち、読み終えて義憤が収まらない。この少女、というか大人になったガワン・サンドルは、今どうしているのか。

　　中国は嘗て日本に侵略されたと声高に言いますが、中国こそ現在
進行形の侵略国家です。本書は､チベットでの侵略の実態を明らかに
します。有識者、宗教関係者、抵抗者に対する投獄・虐待、寺院への
破壊活動、本書主人公のあどけない少女への拷問は言葉を絶します。
中国の国民はチベットだけでなく、未だ信教の自由も思想の自由もあ
りません。中国は、未だ国土拡大の野望を捨てておらず、自分より弱
国には躊躇せず侵略し､蹂躙する国家だと肝に銘じる必要があります。
　「中国はいかにチベットを侵略したか」(講談社インターナショナル)も
合わせてお勧めします。

現在、オリンピック前にチベットでチベット人による蜂起が起きている。
中国側はダライ・ラマの策動であると主張し鎮圧を進めているが、武力鎮圧はないと言う。
日本の報道では青蔵鉄道の開通以降チベット人も潤ったのだと語る識者もいる。
そんな中本書を読めば、今回の暴動が必然的に生じる長い弾圧の歴史の一端が理解できる。
自由チベットと言って投獄された尼僧が辿った運命は、今も継続している。
現在でもチベット人がダライラマの写真を持っているだけで拘束・投獄・本書と同じ拷問があると聞く。
人民解放軍に怯えながら、それでも敬虔な仏教徒達が信仰と尊厳を守り暮らしてきた刻苦の歴史が、現在のチベット騒乱に結びつく必然を読者は理解できるだろう。
歴史的にみても、帝国は常に周縁を取り込むことで拡大し、周縁の文化を獲得することで成長していく。その取扱を間違えた帝国は、周縁から崩壊していく。
オリンピックイヤーを機に、中国という新しい帝国の透明性が問われている。
