久々に宮部ワールドに引き込まれました。作品の中盤，遅々として進まない平坦な流れ…登場人物によって語られる(緻密な取材に基づく)社会問題の解説。先を知りたい読者にとっては少々つらい一時。しかし，こここそじっくりと読まなくてはいけません。そして突然の展開。「えっ! えええっ!」。これがたまりません。宮部さんの作品は単なる推理小説ではありませんよね。犯人が誰?，トリックが何?，なんて読者は期待していません(?)。宮部さんが尊敬する「松本清張」氏の作品に少しずつ近づいているのではありませんか?

人間社会或いは人間関係が生み出している「毒」。
それは、格差社会から生まれるものかも知れないし、もっと別の社会システムから生み出されるものかも知れません。
そうした「毒」に侵されて、社会の中に溶け込めない人たちが増えているのかも知れません。
毎日の新聞を読んでいると、ふとそんな気がしてきます。

もともとがそんな「毒」が元で引き起こされた事件だけに、何のトリックもありません。
従って、所謂「推理小説」の面白さを求めてはいけません。
むしろ、社会問題を扱った「一般小説」或いはせいぜい「犯罪小説」と言うところでしょう。

でも、ストーリー・テラーである作者の力を遺憾なく発揮して、読ませる小説になっています。
結構長い小説なのですが、ノン・ストップで読みたくなる小説です。

夕方購入し、一気に読んでしまいました。物語自体の展開は途中から少し間延びした感じがありましたが、本書が取り上げている人間の「毒」というテーマが読後胸に迫ってきます。
僕の中にある「毒」はなんなのか？と、深遠な気持ちになりました。
ミステリーとしての完成度が最高とは思いませんでしたが、人によっては自分の内面と向き合う機会を持てる、良い本だと思います。
