　毎日、テレビのニュースで気象報道に接しているのですが、例えば台風の「大きさ」とか、「強さ」をいわれてもそれが具体的にどれ位のものかわからない人がほとんどではないでしょうか？
　本書は気象予報士の仕事の中で著者が務めてきた気象キャスターの仕事を紹介した後、台風に絞ってその発生のメカニズム、現在の気象観測と予測の技術の紹介、また、防災のあり方についてわかりやすくまとめています。台風に絞ったことが本書のわかりやすさを実現しているように思います。また、過去の災害とか地域防災のあり方なども大変、興味深く読めます。多くの人に気象報道に関するリテラシーを高めるために読んでもらいたい本です。
　なお、第1章にNHKの気象報道および気象キャスターの仕事の紹介をもってきたのはこのような仕事に興味を持っている若い人にはよいかもしれませんが、その数を考えると最後の章にもっていって気象予報士の仕事の紹介としてまとめ、最初の章は2004年の台風の話を中心にまとめた方が、訴える力が強くなったのではないかと思います。このあたりは出版社の性格から、このようにまとめる結果になったのかもしれませんが・・。
