　地方の出版書籍を専門に扱う書肆アクセスという書店が東京・神田にありますが、そこが私に毎月情報誌を送ってくれています。その2005年4月号のカバーストーリーが本書の著者・田中栞氏の筆になるものでした。最近はそうでもありませんが、何年か前に一時的に古書店めぐりにはまっていた私にとって、田中氏が「古本屋の女房」という本を書いているという記述に興味をひかれ、本書を手にとった次第です。

　著者は昭和34年生まれで本業は校正者とのこと。古本好きが高じてついに古本屋の女房になってしまってからの日々を綴った好エッセイです。

　本の表題と同じ第一章は、古書店業の舞台裏が垣間見られます。「水濡れ本を直す」ための地道な作業に、貴重な資源を無駄にしない「もったいない」精神の一端を見た思いがしました。

　第二章「古本屋めぐりは子連れで」は、著者が幼い子どもの手をひきながら関東のみならず静岡や金沢、青森まで古書店を経巡ってセドリする姿が綴られています。それが仕事とはいえ偏執狂的なすさまじさです。
　著者のような一般古書店がブックオフでもセドリをしているという事実はなかなか興味深く読みました。

　ひとつ気になったのは、本書から滲み出てくる著者の姿は読書家とか愛書家というよりは蒐集家のそれです。これだけの筆力を持った人ですから当然読書量も半端ではないはずなのですが、書を集めることよりも読むことこそが喜びだという口調で綴った箇所は見当たりません。
　人間が死ぬまでに読める本の数などたかが知れています。だからこそ、書を数多く集める暇があるならば限られた数でよいから良書に目を通したいと考える私にとって、書物そのものの中身について言及がほとんどなされていない本書は、少々小首をかしげないでもありませんでした。

横浜在住の私には知っている場所などが出てきたりしてとても親近感を覚えました。
セドリで全国をまわり、大量の本を買っていく話を読むと羨ましくて仕方なく、「古本屋の女房」になるのも面白そうだなぁ、などと思ってしまいました。
本に囲まれた家に生まれ育っている作者の娘さんや息子さんにとってはあたり前の環境かもしれないけど、本好きにとっては一生の夢ですね。
作者のイラストも味があり、とても楽しむことができました。
でも最後が離婚危機の話で生々しく終わってしまったのが、それまでが軽快で面白かったのに、ちょっと後味悪いかもしれないです；

本好きが嵩じて古書店主の妻になったという著者が、二人のなれそめから仕入れの日々、果ては店の経営危機までをストレートに綴った内容。ブックオフへの子連れセドリで大量買いを断られるくだりや、夫婦喧嘩的ナ部分など読んでいていささか鼻白むところもあるのだが、全体としてはディテールが古本好きのツボを突いて来て面白く読める。紙の本に興味のない人にはまったく興味の外だろう一冊だが、元々が読者を限定した本なのであるからして、そんな事はどうでもよろしい。古書店の日常を知りたい愛好家にお勧め。星３つ半の端数を切り捨てて星３つか…とも思ったが、著者によるイラストがとても素敵なので星４つです。
