こんな面白い本、どうしていままで読まなかったんだろう。作者が有名なのも、この作品が有名なのも知っていたのに。と思うと同時に、御手洗潔という探偵に（本業は占星術師なのだけど）出会えてほんとによかったと、読んだあとになんだか幸せな気持ちになった。

梅沢平吉という画家の手記から始まるこの作品は、最初から最後まで読者を惹き付けて飽きさせない。これだけの長篇なのに。事件は４０年間誰もその謎を解くことができなかったという難解なもの。梅沢平吉殺し（しかも密室）、長女一枝殺し、そして平吉の娘と姪の６人が殺されるという大量殺人。しかも、手記によると６人を殺す動機のある平吉は最初に死んでしまっている。残った関係者の中にも物理的にその殺人を成し遂げられるものはおらず。!。。途中に２度も読者への挑戦が挿入されているが、丁寧に読んだつもりなのに、まさかそんなトリックだったとは、と嬉しい驚き。

そしてこの小説の何といっても一番の魅力は探偵・御手洗潔でしょう。他人の目なんて気にしない、ちょっと風変わりでくせのある男。だけどどこか愛嬌のようなものがあって憎めない。始終振り回され、憎まれ口をたたかれながらも彼から離れることのできない石岡くんの気持ちが分かるような気がする。

推理小説が好きで、まだこの本を読んでいない人、読まないと損ですよ。読んでみればわかる、きっといままで読んだ本の中で１、２を争う作品になるはずです。

冒頭は精神病患者のようなおどろおどろしい文が続き
「どうなんのかな」と感じたが杞憂であった。

戦前の事件を1970年代にいる探偵が謎を解くという構造が斬新。
ただ中盤ミスリードの描写が冗長と言えるほど長く中だるみを感じた。

悔しい事に「金田一少年の事件簿」を読んでいたいたのでトリックの驚きは少なかった。
「あからさまにパクってたんだな,,,,」と思うぐらい
まんまこの作品の肝がパクられてます(笑)

よって正統な評価が下せないのが残念です。
しかし「金田一少年の事件簿」を未読の方にはオススメしたい。

衝撃でした……ショックでした！　本格ミステリーのトリックはすべて出し尽くされたと言われつづけ、社会派やサスペンス・アクション物（まあ、そっちも嫌いじゃないけど）にミステリーの主導権が完全に移ったかと思われていたあの80年代に、「そうか、まだこんなトリックが残っていたのか！」と、目から鱗のインパクト。松本清張の登場によって社会派ミステリーが日本に根付いたように、本書が世に出たことによって、それまで時代遅れ呼ばわりされていた本格派が、新たな産声をあげたのです！
