   1958年2月、日本の南極観測探検隊は急遽（きゅうきょ）帰国の途に着くことになり、そのときのアクシデントで15匹の樺太犬を置き去りにせざるを得なくなることに。しかし、それから1年後、再び隊員たちが南極に戻ってきたとき、そこには苛酷な自然の中を生き延びていた2匹の犬、タロとジロの姿があった…。
   奇跡の実話をもとに、『キタキツネ物語』の蔵原惟繕監督がドキュメンタリー・タッチで描いた動物映画、空前の大ヒット作。前半は高倉健と渡瀬恒彦扮する隊員と犬たちとの南極冒険行が魅力的に描かれ、後半は離れ離れになった犬と、人間側のドラマが交互につづられていく。撮影は北極と南極の双方で敢行され、映画史上初めて本物のオーロラを映像で見せることにも成功。大自然の風景を雄大に捉えたヴァンゲリスの音楽もすばらしい。（的田也寸志）

２０年以上前に親に連れられて見に行きました。
今見て、まさか自分もこんなに泣けるとは思いませんでした。
昔の映画って感じが全然しませんよ。

犬を置き去りにしてしまい苦悩する人々、
どんどん命を落としていく犬達、
涙もろい方はタオルが必要です。
ラストも感動の嵐です。

また、CGも使わず広大な氷の大地に
犬だけ走らせて一体どうやって撮影してるんだー！と思いました。
すばらしい映像でした。

例えばプロジェクトＸの南極編などを見れば、第一次越冬隊そのものは
大いなる挑戦であり、苦闘の歴史であったことがわかる。
宗谷は小さなボロ船であり、犬を救えぬまま氷海を離脱しなければ
ならなかったのも、当時の背伸び一杯の日本にとっては
悲しい限界。

犬たちを置いていかざるを得なかったのは事実。

犬は嬉しければ素直に表情に出す。その様は過去に悔いを残す
人たちの心を癒すものだ。自分も犬を飼っているから機微は
なんとなくわかる。

そもそも、首輪抜けをした犬たちの消息がここで描かれる
ようなドラマ仕立てでわかっているわけもなく、
これはあくまでおはなしである。

南極観測の歴史をこの映画以外の筋で知っていれば、

この映画そのものは素直に感動できると思う。

主人公は犬です。そして神々しい南極大陸の姿です。そこに置き去りにされ、必死に生き抜き、又は死んでいった犬たちです。真っ白な氷原を走る犬たちの戦いを、恐怖を、ｳﾞｧﾝｹﾞﾘｽの音楽が厳かに盛り上げます。ようやくやってきた春の海氷上をタロジロが走る南極空撮シーンは命の輝きでまぶしいです。

しかし助役である人間も感動を盛り上げる役を地味に果たしているようです。犬係り(＝健さんと渡瀬さん)との犬橇旅行、犬達に対する思いや葛藤(日本ロケは余計なｼｰｰﾝとしか初めは思えなかったのですが･･･)を描いたからこそ、最後の感動が、ｳﾞｧﾝｹﾞﾘｽの音楽とともに爆発するのでしょう。最後の空撮シーンには、うれしそうに走り回るタロジロと共に健さんと渡瀬さんがいます。
犬は、ｱｻﾞﾗｼでもなければﾍﾟﾝｷﾞﾝでもない。犬を愛してくれる人間とともに生きる動物なんですね。
