読み終わって、「あとがき」の最後に昭和４５年１０月とあって驚いた。全く古臭くないんです。むしろ新しい。

将棋関連の本独特の盤面を用いて解説する箇所はたしか１ページもなかったし、淡々とご自分の言葉で語っておられる。（広島弁？）まさにご本人に話しかけられているような錯覚に陥って一気に読み終えました。男とは、女とは、そして勝負とは・・・。やはりなんの分野にしても、その道を極めた人の言うことは全ての人に通じると思います。

特に男性には必見の書じゃないですか？

どのような道でも、一つの道を極めた人間の哲学は普遍的な輝きがあります。かつて寺山修司は、「人生は競馬の比喩だ」といいましたが、この本は将棋界に一時代を築いた升田幸三が人生を将棋に例えて語っています。その内容は非常に含蓄に富み、深い味わいを与えてくれます。

特に私が印象深かったのは、「いのちがけと遊びの境地」という部分です。升田は、「将棋というのは、勝負であるけれども、やはり娯楽であり、遊びのものである。とすれば、そこに厳しさがあり、鋭さがあっても、何か楽しいものがなければならない」といいます。そしてそれは、文章などの創作の世界にも通じていて、真剣勝負の文章のなかに遊びの境地があれば、読む人にもその楽しさが伝わる、そういうものが本物だ、と続けます。

この文章を読んで、様々な方面に想いを馳せました。ここではふさわしい例えではないかも知れませんが、犯罪を犯した者を徹底的にたたくだけではなく、そこに人間の生のリアルな側面を見て、どこかに救いを見出してやる、というようなことも必要なのかなあ、とおぼろげながらに考えました。

他の文章も、読めば必ず考えさせられます。この本は私の座右の書として、本棚の一番目立つとところに置いておくつもりです。

升田幸三は稀代の勝負師として、大山康晴との名勝負で世を沸かせた人物としても、また個性的な人生観の持ち主としても有名であった。その升田が自分の人生を語ったのが本書であり、期待を裏切らない内容であった。特に１４歳の時に母親の物差しの裏に書置きを残して家出してから波乱の人生を過ごし、名人のタイトルを獲得するまでと、勝負についての升田哲学を述べる部分が特に面白い。また将棋人生で出会ったさまざまな人物を升田の目から見た内容も興味を引く記述が多い。ただ後書きで本人が述べているように、本書執筆の当初の意図が、若いサラリーマンに読んでほしいということだったようで、そのため将棋の考え方をサラリーマン人生に当てはめようとした前半は言わずもがなの部分が多々見受けられる。読者がそれぞれ自分の人生に照らし合わせて異なる感慨を持たせる方がかえって効果は大きかったのでないかと思われる。この点を考慮して星４つとしたが、幅広い年代の読者に訴える内容を持った良書である。
