私たちは学校の国語の授業で、『万葉集』『枕草子』『源氏物語』や芭蕉の俳句などを「古典」として否応なく習わされてきた。しかし、なぜそれらが学ぶべき「古典」なのか、その理由を国語教師は教えてはくれなかったのではないだろうか。もしくは、「古典作品の持つ深い味わい」とか「伝統的な日本の感性」という言葉で、その理由をごまかしてきたのではないだろうか。

この『創造された古典』は、複数の「古典」作品がなぜ「古典」となったのか、その歴史的・政治的背景を論じた論集だ。内容的にはカノン・フォーメーションを扱った国民国家論のバリエーションであり、中にはその手の議論に食傷気味の読者もいるかもしれない。しかし、その点を差し引いても極めて興味深い論集であることは間違いないと思う。

複数の論文をまとめたものなので、内容的にややばらつきがあるのが惜しいところ。個人的に最も興味深かったのは、芭蕉を扱った堀切実氏の論文だった。なお、品田悦一氏の論については、『万葉集の発明』もあわせて参照されたい。
