「割り箸使い捨ては自然破壊に通じる」という、
もっともらしい偽善的命題を否定するのに、
材料の産地ごとの事情や製箸法にまで
踏み込んでていねいに説明している。

著書の中から、誰もが誤解しそうな問題を取り上げてみる。

１）割り箸は「間伐材」を使用している。
→間伐材は製箸に適さない。
　国産箸の場合、端材や背板（丸太を製材した余り）を使う。
　国産の割り箸が売れることが、森林の保全につながる。

２）割り箸は熱帯雨林を破壊している。
→@植林した木から作るのは、野菜の収穫と同じ。
　A熱帯諸国の木材輸出量に占める割り箸相当分は１％未満。

３）現在９割以上中国からの輸入に頼っている。
　中国の森林を破壊していないか。
→中国の自国産木材と中国への輸入木材を併せた
　消費木材のうち、割り箸として日本に輸出されるのは
　やはり１％未満。

なんて、自分は無知だったんだろう！！　
ひさびさに、「見えたつもりになっていた」自分を反省させられる一冊でした。

正直、「割り箸問題」なんて、10年以上も前からエコロジー界ではさんざん既出の話題だし、
揚げ足取り的なやりとりには、まったく興味がないと思っていました。
しかし、著者は、誠実に、歴史を、国境を、企業を横断し、「割り箸」をとりまく文化や森林環境の変化をレポート。
ここ10年の間にも、割り箸をめぐる環境は、そうとうに変化していたようです。

「割り箸」や「森林環境問題」というテーマは、一見、とても地味に思えますが、構成や文体が読みやすく、
最後まで飽きることなく、ぐいぐいと読み通せました。
いろいろな角度からの新発見にも満ちあふれており、まごうことなく読み得な一冊。
読後、きっと、あなたの「お箸」感も、変わりますよ♪

「森林を守るために割り箸を使うな」という話題と、竹の箸の使いやすさを教えられた時期が重なり、1年ほど「My箸」を持ち歩いていた時期がありました。食べ物屋さんでよく忘れて帰っていたため、やがて持ち歩かなくなりましたが。
この本はうまく構成されていて、割り箸のうんちくから林業のあり方、環境問題の捉え方まで、読みやすい文体で読ませてくれます。
そして森林保護と割り箸の使用とは直接結びつくものではないことを明らかにしてくれます。ただし森林の保護には人間の叡智が必要であることも教えてくれます。
