百介――と出逢う前の、若き又市の物語です。
という訳でお馴染みのメンバーは当初あまり出てきません。
まあ、人形のような顔をした少女や、うろうろしている妙な若旦那が居たりもします。
いつものように角川ＭＯＯＫ『怪』連載作品の単行本化でありまして、これまたいつもの如く単行本書下ろしの一編が加えられてます。
又市、若いだけに一層威勢が良いです。瑞々しいとでもいうか。
で、例えば百介視点のように狂言廻し的な視座はそれほど前面に出てきませんで、基本的に又市がメインとして動くというのが特徴的でしょうか。
それでその書き下ろしが、多分最大の読みどころ。『巷説』シリーズ中で度々語られてきた（筈）事件の顛末です。
実にアクティブというか、大破局〈カタストロフィ〉というか、シリーズ中でも屈指の暴威が中篇並の分量で。ちょっと暗め？
そしてこれから十年後（らしい）、百介は、山中の小屋で又市と出逢います。

京極夏彦の【巷説百物語】シリーズ第4弾。取り上げる時代としては最も古い。主人公は又市で、彼が20歳くらいの時から物語は始まる。当時より「小股潜り」の二つ名で呼ばれた又市だったが、後と比べてまだまだ経験は浅く、言うことも青くさい。稼業は双六（すごろく）売りで、御行の扮装もしていない。小悪党の彼がいかにして闇の世界の住人となっていくか、その過程を追った作品である。

あくまで又市中心の話であり、後のシリーズ作品に登場する面々はちらっと顔を見せる程度。収められた6つの中編のうち、圧巻は「旧鼠」。運命を変える大事件に遭遇した又市が下す決断は、シリーズファンなら見届けておきたい。

シリーズの中では、又市が若くてまだ表渡世にいたときの、
いわゆる「エピソード1」になるような作品。
仕掛けのメンバーも違っていて、それだけに仕掛けの内容も荒々しく荒唐無稽な感じもあり。
ただ、雰囲気は異なっても、「必殺仕事人」系のすきっとする感は変わらず。

とはいえ、最後の物語は又市の人生を変えることとなった出来事だけあって、
シリーズの中でもやはり圧巻な展開。
シリーズファンには欠かせない作品かと。
