別宮氏の第2交響曲は、1977年の秋にNHK FMで放送された山田一雄指揮NHK交響楽団の初演をテープに録音して長年愛聴していた（別宮氏の師のひとりメシアンは、この演奏を聴いて第２交響曲を絶賛したとのことである）。このＣＤの湯浅卓雄指揮による演奏は、作曲者による改訂を受けた最終決定版の世界初録音。一聴して驚いた。清冽なリリシズムをまとった精悍さが、初演以上にくっきりと浮き彫りになった熱演である。

1961年、作曲者が30代終わりの時期の作品となる第1交響曲は、私はこのＣＤで初めて聴いたが、まさしく隠れた名曲である。第1楽章の冒頭から一気に引きずりこまれた。憧れ、情熱、焦燥、祈り・・・そんな人間の心の陰翳の一つひとつをていねいに織りこんだ全４楽章、何度聴いても味わい深い。

作品への共感に満ちた熱演によって、隠れた名曲に光が当てられた。しかも、それが廉価で聴ける。リーフレットの解説が充実していることもうれしい。
