「心より出づ。願わくは再び心にいたらんことを」。言うまでもなくベートーヴェンの晩年の大作、「ミサ・ソレムニス」の楽譜に作曲者自身によって書き込まれたことばである。このことばを作曲のモットーに据え、時流に迎合する事を好まず、反前衛を貫いてきたのが別宮貞雄である。このCDに収められたチェロ協奏曲は別宮の作品の中でも特に詩情豊かで親しみを持ちやすい作品である。作品全体は「秋」のトーンが支配しているが、それは季節の「秋」であると同時に人生の｢秋｣でもある。悲哀と離愁、焦燥と諦観。聞くものにさまざまなイメージと共感を引き出し、何度聴いてもあきさせない。堤剛のチェロは完璧。若杉弘の指揮する都響の表現も痛切に秋の情感を訴えている。一人でも多くの人がこの曲と演奏を耳にしてほしいと願わずにはいられない。
　やや時流に流されて作曲したと別宮が自嘲気味に述懐する「ヴァイオリン協奏曲」。だがこれも別宮ならではの作品である。西村朗など、この曲を推す識者は多い。やや攻撃的でリズミックな第３楽章は聴き応え十分。前橋の強靭にしてしなやかなヴァイオリンが、この佳曲に花を添えている。

最近の風潮と違い
前橋汀子はレコーディングには極めて慎重で、小品シリーズを除いてレコーディングが多い方ではない、録音後にお蔵入りした物もあると聞く。ＮＨＫにはＮ響との共演による録音が多数
残されているが、ＣＤ化は期待できない。

この別宮貞雄の協奏曲は彼女にとって極めてまれなライヴ録音である、これは唯一かもしれない貴重な録音であると同時に、この曲も演奏される機会の少なさからも貴重であろう。

前衛音楽の中にいながら根本的にはベートーヴェンを理想とし、調性音楽を希求してきた別宮の音楽は難解ではない。ヴァイオリンの技法的には大変な難曲であるこの曲をライヴで成し遂げた前橋汀子の演奏は気迫がこもっている。１９９３年録音の大変貴重な記念碑的一枚だと思う。
