すごく良かったです。すぐ読み終わってしまいました。いままで読んだミステリーの中で、ダントツ一番です。もっともっと日本史を勉強したいと思います。日本人でよかった。。。

　写楽の謎についての書は数多くあるが，殺人事件の絡んだ小説の中で，証拠を集めながら写楽の正体を探って行くという内容のものは珍しく思う。津田が冴子の協力を得ながら，証拠となる資料を集めて行くストーリー展開は，高木彬光の「ジンギスカンの秘密」を思い出させます。また，最後のどんでん返しでは，同じく高木彬光の「帝国の死角」を思い出しました。
　多少ややこしいけれど，読者をぐいぐい引き込む面白い本です。

浮世絵を巡る殺人事件が描かれるがそれは添え物で、作者オリジナルの写楽説を発表しようとした意欲作。

写楽の正体は、「江戸名所図会」等で知られる斎藤月岑の書によって、蜂須賀家の斎藤十郎兵衛であると長年信じられていたが、数十年前から、斎藤十郎兵衛の実在が疑われ始め(江戸屋敷図に見当たらない事が主な理由)、誰かの別名ではないかという説が横行した。対象として挙げられた者は、版元の蔦屋重三郎、葛飾北斎、喜多川歌麿、十返舎一九等。

作者は作中でこれに対抗するかのように独創的なアイデアを提出する。浮世絵や写楽に興味がない方でも引き込まれる内容で、説得力があると感心した。

現在では、斎藤十郎兵衛の実在が確認され(江戸屋敷図に名が見つかった)、写楽別人説は成立しないが、発表当時としては斬新な説で、ミステリ作家としても歴史探究家としても力量を発揮した快作。
