4.0 out of 5 stars 開発者自らが語るSoftEtherの解説には一見の価値あり, 2004/6/9
本書では、SoftEtherの動作原理から活用事例までが一通り網羅されており、SoftEtherによるL2レベルのVPNを構築するには必要十分な情報は得られるような内容に仕上がっている。

また、簡単ではあるものの、SoftEtherを使った場合のセキュリティリスクについても触れてある。「単純に便利だから」というユーザにも「大丈夫か？」というユーザにもある程度のリスクとその対処に関する検討指針を示している部分は評価に値する。

ただ、L3レベル（IPレベル）で「通信できない」というようなトラブルが報告されることが多いので、簡単にそのようなトラブル事例と対処について述べたり、対処のための手掛かりにも踏み込んでおくと、よりよかったように見える。TCP/IPレベルの話は実際にVPNを構築して使うには必須のものになるので、初心者の方は可能であれば本書とあわせてTCP/IPのネットワーク入門書もあわせて読んでおいた方がよいだろう。

現状、本書以上にSoftEtherに関して動作原理から事例を語る書籍はなく、SoftEtherに関する記述が本書以上に充実している書籍もない。
しかしながら、これだけで実際のVPN構築も理解できるということにはならない（この点については本書の責任範囲ではないとも思うが）ので、この点には注意しておいた方がいいだろう。

さすがに開発者が執筆しただけあって、わかりやすい。
欲を言えば、win2000ユーザーが使用する
『ブリッジを使わない接続』方法について、
より細かい作業方法があれば、
完璧。
他の『萌え本』ガイドとは雲泥の差が感じられた。

ソフトイーサは、tcp/ipの基本の延長線上にある技術である。
しかし、それを実現したところに価値がある。
誰もが考えたことであっても、それを実現した人に賞賛を送るべきだと思う。
ソフトイーサは、日本が誇るべき技術の一つだと思う。
それを日本の企業が大切にするかどうかが課題かもしれない。
