戦国の頃、三千両の黄金を携えた若武者が、七人の近習を従えてこの村に落ちのびた。だが、欲に目の眩んだ村人たちは八人を襲撃、若武者は「七生までこの村を祟ってみせる」と叫び続けながら、七人とともに惨殺された。その後不祥の怪異があい次ぎ、半年後、落人殺害の首謀者、田治見庄左衛門が家族・村人を切り殺し、自らの首をはねて死ぬという事件が起こった。この事件の死者が八人出たことで、村人は恐怖のどん底にたたき込まれた。村人は落武者の怨念を恐れ、犬猫同然に埋めておいた八人の死骸をとりだすと、八つの墓をたて、明神として祟めることにした。以来、この村は“八つ墓村”と呼ばれるようになったという―。大正×年、田治見庄左衛門の子孫、田治見要蔵が突然発狂、三十二人の村人を虐殺し、行方不明となる。それから二十数年、謎の連続殺人事件が再びこの村を襲った…。 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

　本作の面白いところは主人公の一人称で書かれているところである。そのため金田一耕介は対話でしか現れないので以外に存在感が希薄である。しかし、モノローグで進む内容は、先の展開が読めない事件の描写もさることながら、その心理描写において、極めて私小説的技法が、因習を帯びた土着性をものの見事に描ききっているのである。単なるエンターテイメントを超越した、日本文学の伝統や和漢を踏まえた恐ろしく懐の深い素養は、この作品に普遍性を与えており、その意味においても横溝正史はもっと文学的に評価されるにたる作家であることに気づかねばならない。

　あまりにも有名で、以前ドラマ化された物を拝見していて、なんとなく物語を分かっていた気がして今まで読まなかったのですが、今回、読んでみて小説の方が数段上と気がつかされました。私と同じ理由で読まれていない方がいらしたらぜひ読んで見て欲しいと思います。物語のスケールの大きさ、設定の面白さ。主人公の心理の描写の細かさ。大正・昭和初期にかけて、まだ自分の親すら生まれていない世代の私ですが、まるでその場に居合わせたように感じれました。読書の楽しみ方わを教えてもらいました。
読後の感想は｛愛は恐い。｝でした。

さすがは角川文庫の横溝正史シリーズのNo.1作品です。
推理小説として見たらたいした事はないのですが（トリックやら犯人やらですが）ストーリーがおもしろい。かなり厚い本なのですが、ぐいぐい引き込まれて読みきってしまいました。
映画やTV化されてますが、どれもこれもストーリーが変えられていまいちという感じです。
やっぱり原作が一番おもしろいです。
