　日本のフィナンシャルタイムスを(勝手に)標榜する日経より，前作「偏食アカデミー」に続いて出された問題作。筆者は日本経済新聞社の編集委員である。

日常の食べ物は「方言」ではないか-という著者の思いつきから，一人一人が普段何気なく食べているものについての認識が共同幻想に過ぎない(ものもある)ということを，取材に加え今回は日経NET読者からの投稿とを通じてあぶり出している。自分の住んでいるあたりでは通用する(食べられている)が，他の場所では通用しない(食べられていない)という意味から認識のミスマッチを「方言」としたのは言い得て妙である。
タイトルにあるとおり，その「幻想」が日本国内でどのうに分布しているかを読者からの投票を元に地図という形でプロットしているが，地域の伝統として受け継がれているかと思えばいきなり脈絡のなさそうな地域に飛び地していたりしていて興味深い。

　ウエブのコンテンツを元に加筆・訂正を加えているが，ウエブのコンテンツを見なければ分からないような部分もあるが，読んで思い当たるフシのないという人はいないであろう。

中身の文章は、筆者の本文とコメント：読者のメール＝５：５（４：６？）で、読者の短いメールの文体がそれぞれ異なるので、ちょっとよみづらい。筆者のくだけた感じの文体も。
軽い読み物、話のネタに、という程度の期待で読み始めるとちょうどよいかも。新幹線で東京~名古屋で読み終えることができる。

あまり学術的な精度は期待してはいけないが、たとえば名著『アホ・バカ分布』のレベルには到達していない。
テーマ自体は、より追究すればおもしろいのに、残念。

テーマ自体はすごく面白い。従来の民俗学の研究者では決して成し得なかった幅広い「読者」の存在とインターネットという武器を使って、食の文化の分布を考えるというスタンスは素晴らしい。だがこの著者はそういう価値をあまり理解していないようだ。もっと真面目にテーマを追求すればそこに微妙な面白味が出たはずなのに、筆者みずからがおちゃらけ路線に走ってしまい、それに呼応した表面的なメールの羅列でテーマの面白さが飛んでしまったのは残念。全国紙のサイトという制約条件から読者層を広げようとくだけた路線に走ったのかも知れないが、それなら読者を軽く見ている。妙にウケを狙った読みにくい文章も本の価値を損じている。
