もしかしたら、自分の居場所はほかにあるのではないか。今ここではなく、どこか遠くに。子どもの頃、そんなファンタジーを持ったことはありはしないか。
なにか特別な力を与えられ、なにか特別な運命の元に呼ばれ、なにか特別な使命を背負い、なにか特別な仲間と出会い、なにか特別な私が生まれる。
しかし、少数派であるというだけで「特別」になってしまう側から見ると、迫害される悲しみがあるかもしれぬ。ただ当り前に生まれただけであるのに、特別なものを勝手に用意されてしまって。
そんな葛藤を織り込みながらも、すっきりと淡く優しく儚げに、幻が田舎の風景に描き足されていくと、とても魅力的な人々が透けて見えてくる。

常野の一族の伝説や噂話のような、遠くのほうに位置する物語から始まり、読み進むにつれて、少しずつ、どのような一族であるのかがわかるような順序で収められている。
読み終えて思う。光の帝国は子どもたちの帝国。子どもが子どもらしく、その子らしく過ごせる、そんな世界であるのではないか、と。
読み終えたときは、きっと少しきれいな顔になれるだろう。

初めて読んだ恩田陸の作品で、その後何冊か読んだ中でも最も好きな作品。

読みやすく、入り込みやすい。
不思議な現実感があって、本当にこういう人たちがいるように感じてしまう。

ちょっとした気分転換にオススメ

東北の名もない村、「常野」から来た人々には、不思議な力が備わっていた。
膨大な書物を記憶する力、未来を見通す力、遠くの出来事を「見る」力、空を飛ぶ力…。

彼らは、一様に穏やかで、知的で、権力への志向を持たず、普通の人々の間に、
ひっそりと生きているのだが、その能力ゆえ、時として過酷な運命や
果てしない戦いに挑み続けることとなる…。

不思議な能力を持った「常野」の一族をめぐる連作短編集。著者は「ノスタルジアの魔術師」
と称されているらしいが、確かに｢夜のピクニック」や「六番目の小夜子」にも通底する
ノスタルジー色を感じる。

また、「しまう(仕舞う)」とか｢裏返す」とか、常野一族の能力とそれをあらわす言葉が
また面白い。

それと、お約束かもしれないが、「超」能力者たちが能力ゆえに直面する苦悩や
悲劇についての、十分共感できる「お話作り」の手際の良さは、ストーリー・テラーの
面目躍如であろう。

全部で10の短編が収められており、一部関連のあるものもあるが、基本的にはそれぞれが
独立しており、また、いずれもto be continued といった終わり方なので、続編を
早く読みたくなる。

しかし、これだけ様々な物語を作ってしまうと、これをすべて収束させるのは大事業だなと
ひとごとながら心配してしまう。全10巻、ぐらいじゃすまないのではないだろうか?
