　著者特有の毒舌ジョークが随所に散りばめられている愉快な本です。何度も笑ってしまいました。電車の中で読んでいるとニヤニヤしてしまうからちょっと危険かも。

　しかしこの本には芯が一本しっかり通っていて、外国語を身につけるには「強い動機づけ」と「やめない努力」が必要だということがよくわかります。その動機も、日本人の友達を驚かせたい、日本のマンガが読めるようになりたい、という趣味と遊びの領域であれば気持ちをラクにして外国語が身につけられるのだという点には大いに頷かされました。生真面目に勉強するという態度では外国語の学習は長続きしないんですよね。

テレビに出演している外国人の中でも、ひときわ
日本語の上手なデーブに、以前から興味をもっていました。
この本の中で披露されている手書きの単語帳には、
難しい漢字がびっしりと書かれています。
デーブが昔から、日本が大好きだったということは知っていましたが、
１０代の頃、シカゴで日本語を勉強していたときの勉強方法を知り、

ちょっと感動するほどでした。

国際結婚をしたデーブと京子夫人の都会的なライフスタイルにも
興味をもっています。
京子夫人にも、また新しい本を書いてもらいたいです。
